Prognostic Value of Circulating Inflammatory Cells in Patients with Stable and Acute Coronary Artery Disease

Abstract: Atherosclerosis is a lipid driven chronic inflammatory disease underlying the majority of ischemic events such as myocardial infarction or stroke. Clinical management of ischemic events has improved considerably in the past decades. Accordingly, survival rates have increased. Nevertheless, 12% of patients die within 6 months after the initial event. To improve secondary prevention, appropriate risk prediction is key. However, up to date, there is no clinically available routine marker to identify patients at h… Show more

“…Identifying a high-risk pattern of circulating inflammatory cells may have prognostic value for secondary prevention in ischaemic patients. According to Meeuwsen's recent review, elevated numbers of neutrophils appear to be consistently related to adverse outcomes in CAD and post-AMI patients and, despite the limited existing data, adds significant prognostic value in addition to common prediction calculators such as GRACE and the TIMI score ( 45 ).…”

“…NLR is shown to be associated with chronic kidney disease, major cardiovascular events, and hospitalizations for HF in elderly patients [20]. NLR was an independent predictor of outcome in patients with stable coronary artery disease (CAD) and a predictor of short- and long-term mortality in patients with acute coronary syndromes (ACS), ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), and cardiac transplantation [3133]. Despite the prominent role of neutrophils in inducing the chronic inflammatory response in the pathogenesis of many diseases, neutrophil-targeted treatments are still not available [34].…”

“…Inflammation is a critical pathological factor in multiple major diseases including cerebral ischemia (24), acute myocardial infarction (23), stable coronary artery disease (15), Parkinson's disease (21) and lung cancer (19). A number of proinflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines are important mediators of inflammation (1- 5,9,12,14,16,25,27).…”
