Effect on interleukin‐1β and interleukin‐8 levels following use of fibrin sealant for periodontal surgery

Abstract: Background: Fibrin sealant (FS) is a biologically derived tissue adhesive for securing flaps. The aim of the present randomized controlled clinical trial was to compare early wound healing by assessing interleukin-1b (IL-1b) and interleukin-8 (IL-8) levels from gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) after using FS and suture for periodontal flap closure. Methods: Thirty selected quadrants in 15 periodontitis patients were randomly assigned to either a test (fibrining) or control group (suturing) for flap closure. IL-… Show more

“…Periodontal flap closure using fibrin sealant results in a reduction of inflammatory cell accumulation but an increase in blood vessels in the wound area compared with the use of conventional sutures [ 21 ]. The application of fibrin in periodontal surgery reduces interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and IL-8 levels in gingival crevicular fluid [ 22 ]. In addition, the bleeding parameter is significantly decreased in those defects treated with fibrin sealant compared with controls [ 22 ].…”

“…The application of fibrin in periodontal surgery reduces interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and IL-8 levels in gingival crevicular fluid [ 22 ]. In addition, the bleeding parameter is significantly decreased in those defects treated with fibrin sealant compared with controls [ 22 ]. However, the supply of fibrinogen, a substrate for fibrin formation, is limited.…”

“…It has been demonstrated that evaluation of cytokine levels in wound fluids is a sensitive and specific assessment of inflammation . Specifically, mediators such as interleukin (IL)‐1β and IL‐8 are crucial for post‐surgical wound healing . IL‐1β induces periodontal inflammation, upregulates adhesion molecules on endothelial cells, stimulates chemokine production and induces the expression of other mediators that amplify the inflammatory response .…”

“…Periodontal diseases which primarily include gingivitis and periodontitis are caused by the bacterial biofilm but mediated and modified by the host [ 5 ]. Studies on natural products for periodontal diseases have led to commercially available medication especially for gingivitis [ 5 , 6 ]. Natural products have many properties which can have an effect on the immune and inflammatory process during disease progression apart from inhibiting pathogenic bacteria [ 7 , 8 ].…”
