Biomarkers Associated with Obesity and Overweight in the Roma Population Residing in Eastern Slovakia

Abstract: SUMMARYBackground: Obesity and overweight are major contributors to the global burden of chronic diseases and disability in both majority and minority populations. Methods: Data from the cross-sectional population-based HepaMeta study conducted in Slovakia in 2011 were used. The sample comprised a total of 452 Roma. Measurements of special bioactive mediators were taken in final groups consisting of 63 male Roma respondents (mean age = 32.59; SD = 8.63) and 117 female Roma respondents (mean age = 34.55; SD = 8.… Show more

“…Here, the gastric leptinR and leptin mRNA are elevated in obese individuals. Our findings within the gastric tissue are in line with the dramatically increased leptin level in serum, as found here and in previous studies . In the stomach, leptin and leptin receptor mRNA, as well as the serum level of leptin, are elevated in obese humans.…”

“…Obese Roma people had larger waist circumference, hip circumference, waist to hip ratio, lower levels of HDL cholesterol, adiponectin, and higher levels of triacylglyceroles. Furthermore, inflammatory parameters (CRP and TNF alpha) were elevated in this population (19). Prevalence of metabolic syndrome increases with age.…”
