Biotin selective polymer nano-films

Abstract: BackgroundThe interaction between biotin and avidin is utilized in a wide range of assay and diagnostic systems. A robust material capable of binding biotin should offer scope in the development of reusable assay materials and biosensor recognition elements.ResultsBiotin-selective thin (3–5 nm) films have been fabricated on hexadecanethiol self assembled monolayer (SAM) coated Au/quartz resonators. The films were prepared based upon a molecular imprinting strategy where N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide and 2-acryla… Show more

“…The first immunosensor based on piezoelectric detection was reported in 1972 by Shons and co-workers [ 18 , 19 , 20 ]. The QCM technique has since been undergone significant development, whereby today it is possible to use synthetic polymer-based antibody mimics [ 21 , 22 ] and even cells as sensor recognition elements [ 7 , 23 , 24 , 25 , 26 , 27 , 28 ].…”

“…There have been relatively few reports of the preparation of polymers imprinted with our chosen templates: fumonisin B2 MIPs for solid-phase extraction have been prepared by bulk polymerisation in acetonitrile8; glucosamine MIPs, prepared in aqueous buffer, have been reported for extraction of the monosaccharide from chicory root9; l -thyroxine-imprinted films have been prepared on electrodes for sensing applications1011; while biotin MIPs have been prepared as sol-gel magnetic core-shell particles12, as thin films1314 and in bulk format15. In contract to these diverse methods of synthesis, the imprinted polymer nanoparticles prepared in this work were all prepared in aqueous media, irrespective of the solubility or otherwise of the template molecules in water.…”

“…Biotin and its analogs are good templates that have previously been used to prepare MIPs mainly taking advantage of electrostatic interactions between the polymer and the carboxylic group besides the ureido functionality . Some successful attempts to achieve biotin binding MIPs have been described in the literature .…”
