Influence of Physical Activity and Nutrition on Obesity-Related Immune Function

Abstract: Research examining immune function during obesity suggests that excessive adiposity is linked to impaired immune responses leading to pathology. The deleterious effects of obesity on immunity have been associated with the systemic proinflammatory profile generated by the secretory molecules derived from adipose cells. These include inflammatory peptides, such as TNF-α, CRP, and IL-6. Consequently, obesity is now characterized as a state of chronic low-grade systemic inflammation, a condition considerably linke… Show more

“…50 In our study, being over-weight (BMI ! 25 kg/m 2 ) was significantly associated with false-negative T-SPOT.TB results in pulmonary TB patients, and IFN-g production (the number of SFCs/million PBMCs) in the T-SPOT.TB test was also depressed in overweight patients.…”

“…Moreover, using hospital controls and administering validated FFQs by trained interviewers in a hospital setting might have further reduced recall bias and improved comparability of information across cases and controls. Another limitation is the non-availability of appropriate data on physical activity measure which in present form is fairly poor, and doesn't capture duration, frequency and intensity; and physical activity is known to play a major role in modulating inflammation (38). …”

“…54 In addition, physical activity also seems to play an important role in mediating immune activity by increasing the number of distinct immune cells. 55 Sedentary behavior, in contrast, has been linked to impaired immune responses underscoring the importance of a holistic therapeutic approach integrating weight loss, physical exercise, metabolic hemostasis and immunity. 56 Moreover, improvements in insulin and glucose levels can be detected within days following bariatric surgery, again, prior to significant weight losses.…”
