“…b No such correlation was detected in the present study, but the relationship between RDW and serum urea and creatinine concentration in human patients with PH is contradictory, with one study showing a significant correlation with serum urea and a strong trend towards significance with serum creatinine 15 whereas in other studies no such correlation was identified. 13,14 Interestingly, in contrast to studies in human patients 10,12 but in line with the canine study by Poser, b we found no significant correlation between RDW and peak TR or PR jet velocity, which may reflect differences in sample size between canine studies and the larger investigations in human patients. To date, the only circulating biomarker shown to be associated with peak TR gradient in dogs with PH is N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP).…”

“…25 The RDW has been shown to predict outcome in human patients with pre-and postcapillary PH in numerous studies. [10][11][12][13][14][15] In the present study however, RDW did not provide clinically useful prognostic information in dogs with PH. This result may reflect the small sample size of affected dogs, particularly as there was a trend towards increased mortality with higher RDW values as observed in people, 15 or the influence of treatments such as furosemide, sildenafil and pimobendan instituted following diagnosis of PH.…”

“…It is hence noteworthy that, after the publication of the first study by Felker et al in 2007 [3], the number of papers about RDW as predictor of morbidity and mortality in health and disease has exponentially increased, with a mean raise of 27% per year (Figure 2). More recently, this journal has also published some original research that have further expanded the boundaries of potential clinical applications of RDW, for prediction of survival in patients with liver disease [9] and Eisenmenger syndrome [10], as well as for prognostication of chronic pulmonary hypertension in patients with acute pulmonary embolism [11]. A recent study published in this issue of the journal has also convincingly demonstrated that both gender and age are important determinants of Year Number of published items [3] Figure 2 Number of papers retrieved from the Scopus database using the keywords "red blood cell distribution width" or "RDW".…”

“…MCV and RDW are two useful parameters, reflecting the volume of red blood cell and the degree of heterogeneity of erythrocyte size, respectively. Previously, RDW has been regarded as an independent prognostic indicator in adult with PAH (16,17) as well as Eisenmenger syndrome (18). However, the prognostic value is not confirmed in pediatric PAH (19).…”
