Carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus stoichiometry of plankton and the nutrient regime in Cabo Frio Bay, SE Brazil

Abstract: This long-term study, performed during the years 2003-2005 and 2008-2009, investigated the carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) contents of the phyto- and zooplankton communities and the nutrient regime of Cabo Frio Bay, SE Brazil. The information intends to serve as baseline of the plankton C, N, and P stoichiometry for the calibration of biogeochemical and ecological models in support to future findings related to the local and regional phenomena of climatic change. Cabo Frio Bay is a small semienclo… Show more

“…In the P-limited treatment (or '−P'), the addition of K 2 HPO 4 3− was omitted and the concentration of PO 4 3− -P was reduced to 0.6 µM (N:P = 2336). This high value of the N:P ratio (2336) was intended to create nutrient gradients in the rotifers in our study similar to those in natural zooplankton populations (Kütter et al 2014), as the rotifers were able to maintain their elementary homeostasis to some extent. The ionic strength in the nutrient-limited treatments was maintained by the addition of KCl.…”

“…without consideration of ubiquitous di-nitrogen gas, as a consequence instead of faster P recycling of nearshore decomposing diatom populations (Walsh et al, 2006). Off Brazil, siliceous net phytoplankton of >20 microns sizes occurred during both seasonal upwelling periods (Guenther et al, 2008;Kutter et al, 2014) and at the mouths of the Amazon, Sao Franciso, and La Plata Rivers (Brandini et al, 2007;de Rezende et al, 2015;Medeiros et al, 2016).…”

“…-3 ) sendo que as concentrações mais elevadas são geralmente associadas ao incremento da pluviometria em áreas com mata ripária degradado sendo esse também fator contributivo para os achados desse estudo. Além disso, os resultados encontrados na estação seca podem estar associados à dessorção do fósforo dos sedimentos, frente à redução da vazão e profundidade devido à estiagem (KÜTTER et al, 2014).…”
