This review aimed to identify the unmet supportive care needs to conduct an integrative review of the literature, to identify the unmet supportive care needs of Arab people affected by cancer (patients and caregivers), and the impact of these needs on quality of life and psychosocial well-being. In July 2015 databases, search engines and electronic list servers were searched, with no limit on the year of publication. Reference lists of included articles and published reviews were also hand searched. Six studies met the inclusion criteria. Most studies examined the supportive care/unmet needs of Arab cancer patients and their family caregivers. Language, communication, information, and the need to get relief from dependency were the most frequently reported unmet needs among Arab cancer patients. For immigrant Arab patients, physical unmet needs were higher than other migrant groups and native Anglo-Australians. Arab caregivers’ unmet needs included concerns about providing suitable care for their family member, sharing their experience with other caregivers, obtaining information, and, in the case of pediatric cancers, dealing with siblings’ emotional reactions. The existing literature exploring the unmet supportive care needs of Arab people affected by cancer is limited suggesting that comprehensive studies are needed to enhance our understanding of these needs and to inform service planning.

Purpose: To assess the invariance of a culturally competent multi-lingual unmet needs survey.Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among immigrants of Arabic, Chinese and Greekspeaking backgrounds, and Anglo-Australian-born controls, recruited through Cancer Registries (n = 591) and oncology clinics (n = 900). The survey included four subscales, with newly developed items addressing unmet need in culturally competent health information and patient support (CCHIPS), and items adapted from existing questionnaires addressing physical and daily living (PDL), sexuality (SEX) and survivorship (SURV) unmet need. The measure was translated into Arabic, Chinese and Greek. Rasch analysis was carried out on the four domains.Results: While many items were mistargeted to less prevalent areas of unmet need, causing substantial floor effects in person estimates, reliability indices were all acceptable. The CCHIPS domain showed differential item functioning (DIF) for cultural background and language and the PDL domain showed DIF for treatment phase and gender. The results for SEX and SURV domains were limited by floor effects and missing responses. All domains showed adequate fit to the model after DIF was resolved and a small number of items were deleted.Conclusions: The study highlights the intricacies in designing a culturally competent survey that can be applied to culturally and linguistically diverse groups across different treatment contexts. Overall, the results demonstrate that this survey is somewhat invariant with respect to these factors. Future refinements are suggested to enhance the survey's cultural competence and general validity.Identification of the unmet supportive care needs of cancer patients and survivors informs appropriate resource allocation and optimisation of service provision relative to actual needs [1][2][3][4].To date, such assessment has focused on non-immigrant cancer patients. Immigrant groups diagnosed with cancer are worse off than comparable non-immigrant groups in terms of survival [5], psychological morbidity and quality of life [6]. These disparities may arise from a lack of familiarity with the healthcare system, lack of culturally appropriate information, communication difficulties for culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) patients, and cultural attitudes and beliefs toward cancer [7][8][9]. Thus there is an imperative to develop and validate a questionnaire to assess unmet needs in immigrant cancer patients and survivors [2,10,11].Existing unmet needs questionnaires address themes that may be common to immigrant and nonimmigrant cancer survivors, including needs related to the health system and information, physical and daily living, patient care and support, sexuality, and survivorship [1,4,7]. Introduction:Cultural diversity places increased demands on services to multicultural populations, so the development of cultural competence by help professionals is currently a concern in institutional practices. Material and Methods:This study evaluated the perception of cultural competence of help professional of three distinct areas: health services, social services and criminal police. Through an online questionnaire, we questioned the perception of cultural competence, at four dimensions: cultural awareness, cultural knowledge, technical skills, and organizational support. There were 610 participants, mostly female (58%), with a mean age of 39.74 years, developing activity in the social area (37%), health (33%) or the police (30%). Results:The professionals showed, in general, a positive perception of their cultural competence. Those who had formative experiences on the subject and had more time service, perceived themselves, significantly, as more culturally competent. Significant differences were found between professionals from different areas: health professionals were more effective in terms of technical skills, the social workers at the level of cultural knowledge and polices at the level of cultural awareness. Health professionals were the ones that showed a lower perception at the level of organizational support. Discussion: Despite the positive perception that technicians have about their awareness and knowledge of the values, norms and customs of immigrant communities, they realize technical aptitude as less positive, showing difficulty in practical application of their knowledge. Conclusions: Cultural competence has implications for good professional practice in serving multicultural populations, being urgent to invest in the development of culturally competent interventions to ensure more effective services, namely in hospitals and health centres.
