Development of a Scale to Assess Knowledge about Suicide Postvention using Item Response Theory

Abstract: Knowledge about suicide postvention (KSPV) is an important distal outcome in the evaluation of suicide prevention programs that focus on the bereaved. However, most scales are specifically tailored to the evaluation study in question and psychometric properties are often unsatisfactory. Therefore, we developed the KSPV scale. Scale properties were investigated with Rasch trees, a newly developed method in the framework of item response theory. Additionally, we provide cues for convergent validity. In summary, … Show more

“…In addition, although online assessment has some advantages over face-to-face, pen-and-paper, and telephone interviewing, a random sample of a known population is needed to demonstrate population prevalances of the individual item attributes. This study substantiated the benefits of using IRT analyses for testing item and scale attributes [ 48 , 53 , 113 ]. The only known study to previously use IRT to develop a suicide-related test was on knowledge of suicide postvention [ 113 ].…”

“…The five samples used for development of the Proactive, Reactive, and Acquisitive scales included participants from parole offices, university, probation offices, and prison. Multiple strategies were incorporated in the development of these scales, which is consistent with other test developers (Nader et al, 2013; Stein et al, 2013; Ward, Gibson, Boman, & Leite, 2010). The application of these scales can be for treatment recommendation and evaluation, adjunct to risk assessment, and the explanation of causality of crime and criminal behavior.…”
