Clinical Effectiveness of a Hydrophobic Coating Used in Conjunction With a One-step Self-etch Adhesive: An 18-month Evaluation

Abstract: This 18-month clinical evaluation showed that the use of a hydrophobic resin coat over a one-step self-etch adhesive does not improve clinical performance in noncarious cervical lesions. SUMMARYThe purpose of this randomized clinical trial was to evaluate the clinical performance of a one-step self-etch adhesive in noncarious cervical lesions with inclusion of a hydrophobic bonding layer not included in the original bonding system as a test of potentially improved bonding. Patients with noncarious cervical les… Show more

“…Its intrinsic chemical bonding, combined with the good mechanical properties and high conversion rate of a filled hydrophobic resin, 52,53 resulted in very good clinical behavior of Clearfil SE Bond (CSE, Kuraray, Osaka, Japan) at eight years. 12 The clinical behavior of SU in our study was also similar to that of Adper Easy Bond (AEB, 3M ESPE), a one-step self-etch adhesive, in a recent 18-month clinical study, 43 regardless of the application of a hydrophobic resin layer over AEB. This similarity in clinical behavior between these two adhesives from the same manufacturer may have to do with the comparable concentration of the polyalkenoic acid copolymer in both materials (1%-5%).…”

“…This percentage is very similar to what was previously reported in clinical trials that used the USPHS-modified criteria after 18 months of evaluation. 23,25,35,43,44 On the other hand, marginal integrity was statistically worse for SE when assessed with the FDI criteria, specifically when SQUACE was used.…”

“…This is probably due to the fact that the adhesive performance is highly product-dependent within each category, as reported by Peumans et al 22 So far, few clinical studies on NCCL have been conducted with the adhesive Adper Easy One. [33][34][35] The reported retention rates of these studies are higher than those of the control group in this study and closer to that reported in the aforementioned systematic review. 22 However, several factors such as the study population, inclusion and exclusion criteria, technical procedures, and the operators' experience vary among studies and might influence the results.…”

“…Em 2013 Sartori et al 21 avaliaram a efetividade de uma camada hidrofóbica de resina, utilizada associada a um adesivo de passo único. O acompanhamento após 18 meses desse trabalho verificou que não aconteceu um aumento de resistência adesiva dessas restaurações em lesões não cariosas no período observado.…”
