By “anadeixis” (a termed first coined by Ehlich, 1982) is meant, prototypically, the indexical functioning of certain context-bound expressions to target discourse entities which are either not yet topical, or whose erstwhile topical status has faded. It is the discourse-structuring function of anadeictic indexicals that will be the particular focus of this study. The basis for the discussion will be two short whole texts, in two languages (French and English). This will make it possible to show how certain ‘strict’-anadeictic and discourse-deictic references may signal the macro- (content structures) and super-structures (discourse-functional structures) that characterize them. Such references may serve either to foreshadow a transition between major discourse units within a given text, or to actually introduce one.

Cet article se penche sur différents emplois de là, tels qu'ils s'observent dans des interactions de service entre des coiffeurs et leurs clients. La première partie illustre plusieurs occurrences de là dans ce contexte professionnel, qui témoignent d'un usage notamment temporel et anaphorique. La deuxième partie se focalise sur l'utilisation de là en tant que déictique spatial. Dans son emploi lié à l'espace, là est régulièrement accompagné de ressources manuelles comme des gestes de pointage ou de préhension. Cette coordination de ressources verbales et manuelles permet aux locuteurs d'effectuer une réorientation conjointe de l'attention sur un objet extralinguistique. Selon une perspective résolument praxéologique, cet article accorde donc un intérêt particulier à l'ajustement temporel entre une ressource verbale (là) et ses pratiques manuelles co-occurrentes.

This article describes the evolution of past/perfective subject-verb agreement morphology in the Tukanoan family, reconstructing relevant aspects of Proto-Tukanoan verbal morphology and delineating the subsequent diachronic development of verbal subject agreement morphology in the Eastern branch of the family. We argue that suffixes that cumulatively expone past/perfective and person, number, and gender (PNG) subject agreement resulted from the fusion of post-verbal demonstratives/pronouns expressing PNG information with suffixes expressing past/perfective TAM information. We propose that different PNG agreement categories developed at successive stages in the diversification of the family, with third person masculine singular subject agreement emerging before other PNG categories, followed by animate plural agreement, then finally by the development of third person feminine agreement. The result in Eastern Tukanoan was a cross-linguistically unusual agreement system that contrasts four agreement categories: (i) first and second person singular and third person inanimate (singular and plural); (ii) third person animate masculine singular; (iii) third person animate feminine singular; and (iv) third animate plural.
