2-Hydroxycinnamaldehyde inhibits the epithelial-mesenchymal transition in breast cancer cells

Abstract: Since epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) plays a critical role in cancer progression and in maintaining cancer stem cell properties, EMT is emerging as a therapeutic target for inhibiting the metastatic progression of cancer cells. 2'-Hydroxycinnamaldehyde (HCA) and its derivative, 2'-benzoyloxycinnamaldehyde, have recently been suggested as promising therapeutic candidates for cancer treatment. The purpose of this study is to investigate the anti-metastatic effect of HCA on breast cancer and the molecula… Show more

“…Cinnamaldehyde inhibited phosphorylation of phospholipase Cγ1 (PLCγ1) [17] and ERK1/2 [18]. Not only cinnamaldehyde, also its derivatives have diverse biological activities [35][36][37][38][39][40]. In particular, phydroxycinnamic acid, 4-hydroxy-3-methoxycinnamaldehyde and α-bromo-4-chlorocinnamaldehyde have the immunomodulatory effects in mammalian cells [36,37,39].…”

“…Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) plays a critical role in cancer progression and in maintaining cancer stem cell properties and hence is emerging as a therapeutic target for inhibiting the progression of cancer cells. Recent studies by Ismail et al [46], have investigated the role of 2'-Hydroxycinnamaldehyde, a compound originally isolated from cruciferous vegetables, in suppressing breast cancer metastasis by nuclear translocalization of GSK-3β via modulating Snail, which results in the transcriptional up-regulation of E-cadherin [46]. Curcumin, a natural compound extracted from Curcuma longa, an ingredient in Indian food preparations, has been shown to limit the metastatic potential of adenocarcinoma cell lines by shifting the expression of adhesion molecules and the organization and stiffness of the cell cytoskeleton [47].…”
