Despite the sanitary importance of the European house dust mite Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (Trouessart, 1897), the pheromonal communication in this species has not been sufficiently studied. Headspace analysis using solid phase micro extraction (SPME) revealed that nerol, neryl formate, pentadecane, (6Z,9Z)-6,9-heptadecadiene, and (Z)-8-heptadecene are released by both sexes whereas neryl propionate was released by males only. Tritonymphs did not produce any detectable volatiles. In olfactometer experiments, pentadecane and neryl propionate were attractive to both sexes as well as to tritonymphs. (Z)-8-heptadecene was only attractive to male mites. Therefore it is discussed that pentadecane and neryl propionate are aggregation pheromones and (Z)-8-heptadecene is a sexual pheromone of the European house dust mite D. pteronyssinus. To study the potential use of pheromones in dust mite control, long-range olfactometer experiments were conducted showing that mites can be attracted to neryl propionate over distances of at least 50 cm. This indicates that mite pheromones might be useable to monitor the presence or absence of mites in the context of control strategies.

Clinical observations have suggested that there is an association of atopic conditions with hypersensitivity reactions to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). This relationship has been especially present in patients allergic to mites. This study was designed to review clinical and experimental evidence linking atopy, mite allergy, and hypersensitivity to aspirin and NSAIDs and discuss the possible mechanisms explaining this association. A review of the medical literature concerning the association of atopic diseases, mite hypersensitivity, and intolerance to NSAIDs using PubMed and other relevant articles is presented. NSAID-sensitive patients are frequently atopic and allergic to mites, and patients who develop oral mite anaphylaxis (OMA) show an increased prevalence of NSAID hypersensitivity. The study of atopic, mite-sensitive patients, who experience urticaria and angioedema when exposed to NSAIDs and patients with OMA suggests an interesting interaction between atopic allergy and disorders of leukotriene synthesis or metabolism. Various mechanisms that could be involved in this interaction are presented, including genetic factors, inhibition of cyclooxygenase-1, and other effects (not related to IgE sensitization) of mite constituents on the immune system. The association of mite hypersensitivity with aspirin/NSAIDs intolerance has been confirmed and provides additional clues to various nonallergic pathways that may contribute to the acute and chronic inflammatory process observed in atopic, mite-allergic, individuals. The clinical relevance of these observations is presently under investigation.

A anafilaxia provocada pela ingestão de farinhas contaminadas por ácaros, nomeadamente farinha de trigo, é uma entidade rara. Descrevemos o caso de um rapaz de 12 anos, com antecedentes de rinite alérgica e suspeita de hipersensibilidade a anti-inflamatórios não esteroides, que apresentou dois episódios de anafilaxia sem desencadeante conhecido. Ambos os episódios ocorreram após ingestão de alimentos, que foram posteriormente tolerados. Realizaram-se testes cutâneos por picada para aeroalergénios e para os alimentos ingeridos antes das reações, positivos para ácaros e farinha de trigo do pacote utilizado e negativos para o extrato comercial de trigo, gliadina e farinha de trigo com e sem fermento de novos pacotes. Assumiu-se o diagnóstico de “síndrome da panqueca” e comprovou-se a hipersensibilidade a ibuprofeno, por resultado positivo em prova de provocação oral. Apresentamos este caso por se tratar de um diagnóstico que exige elevado nível de suspeição, devendo ser considerado no diagnóstico diferencial de anafilaxia sem causa aparente.
