Summary In this study, excellent performance and wide operating voltage are obtained with an aqueous electrolyte. Aqueous electrolytes are attracted more attention than other electrolytes (such as organic solvents, ionic liquids) in supercapacitor applications because of their safety, low cost, nontoxicity. Polypyrrole (PPy), aniline 2‐sulfonic acid (ASA) modified electrodes are hydrothermal synthesized on carbon felt (CFt) for supercapacitor applications. We investigate the presence of the concentration of ASA on the polymerization of the PPy. Furthermore, a high operating voltage of 3.0 V asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) with graphite plate is assembled 3 M KCI. CFt/PPy/ASA(0.02)//GP exhibits a high specific capacitance value of 902.9 F g−1 at 5 mV s−1 and after 5000 cycle‐life testing 93.6% capacitance retention at a scan rate of 1000 mV s−1. The assembled ASC has an ultrahigh‐energy density of 1005 Wh kg−1 while delivering a power density of 3000 W kg−1 at a current density of 2 A g−1. The effect of ASA concentration on the supercapacitor performance has been observed.

Aqueous electrolytes show the potential of application for high-performance supercapacitors. However, their limited operating voltages set limits for widespread applications. Herein, the feasibility of applying the sulfolane (SL)saturated 3 m LiTFSI aqueous electrolytes for supercapacitors is shown. These electrolytes possess high conductivities and wide electrochemical stable windows (ESWs), demonstrating the potential applications in high-voltage supercapacitors. Activated carbon//3 m LiTFSI SL/Water //activated carbon supercapacitor is assembled to possess a high voltage of 2.5 V and outstanding capacitive performance (106 F g À1 at 0.5 A g À1 , >10 000 cycles). Also, a high areal capacitance up to 1.52 F cm À2 is obtained by applying a high mass loading electrode (13.06 mg cm À2 ). Furthermore, a flexible symmetric semi-solid-state supercapacitor (2.5 V) is fabricated. Impressive performance can be obtained. Thus, the finding suggests a promising electrolyte design for high-voltage aqueous supercapacitors.

Lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs) are promising candidates within the context of the development of novel battery concepts with high energy densities. Batteries with high operating potentials or high voltage (HV) LIBs (>4.2 V vs Li+/Li) can provide high energy densities and are therefore attractive in high‐performance LIBs. However, a variety of challenges (including solid electrolyte interface (SEI), lithium plating, etc.) and related safety issues (such as gas formation or thermal runaway effects) must be solved for the practical, widespread application of HV‐LIBs. Most of these challenges arise in the region between the electrodes: the electrolyte region. This review provides an overview of recent development and progress on the electrolyte region, including liquid electrolytes, ionic liquids, gel polymer electrolytes, separators, and solid electrolytes for HV‐LIBs applications. A focus on improving the safety of these systems, with some perspectives on their relative cost and environmental impact, is given. Overall, the new information is encouraging for the development of HV‐LIBs, and this review serves as a guide for potential strategies to improve their safety, allowing the development of HV‐LIBs, including solid‐state batteries, to be accelerated to practical relevance.
