± 180° Discontinuous PWM for Single-Phase PWM Converter of High-Speed Railway Propulsion System

Abstract: As high-capacity alternating current/direct current (ac/dc) power conversion systems, single-phase pulse-width modulation (PWM) converters used in high-speed railway propulsion systems adopt high-voltage Insulated-Gate Bipolar Transistors (IGBTs) as switching elements. Due to their high breakdown voltage characteristics, the switching dynamics are inferior to those of low-voltage IGBTs and switching losses are more dominant than conduction losses despite operating at relatively low switching frequencies of hun… Show more

“…As shown in the power switch technology scaling illustration in Figure 7, the insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) is the most suitable switch type for our application. A single-phase inverter in the H-bridge topology consists of four IGBT switching devices, as shown in Figure 8 [13]. When switches S1, S3 and S2, S4 are alternately switched on and off at a frequency of fs, an alternating voltage waveform is produced across the drive coils in the launcher.…”

“…Here, E is the unit voltage level of the capacitor and means one third of the DC-link voltage Vdc. In MNRV DPWM, a ±180º clamped switching state is introduced to reduce switching loss and redundancy [39]. When Vcmd > 0, in UCM, VCMD_A is clamped to a Vdc value and VCMD_B is classified to LVR or SVR according to the magnitude of VCMD_B, and in LCM, VCMD_B is clamped to 0 value and VCMD_A is divided to LVR or SVR depending to the magnitude of VCMD_A.…”
