170 Trends in mycotoxin contamination in the united states corn

Abstract: Mycotoxins are harmful secondary fungal metabolites and are of key concern to food and feed safety globally. In addition to compromised performance, mycotoxins negatively impact animal health. Although classic signs such as decreased feed intake and vomiting are known in the field as indicators for exposure, mycotoxins act as predisposing factors for diseases by immune suppression, causing inflammation, and modulating the gastrointestinal environment, even at low levels. This survey presents mycotoxin levels o… Show more

“…Specifically, in pig feeds, 96% of samples were found to be contaminated with at least one mycotoxin globally [ 14 ]. Recent publications [ 3 , 4 , 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 ] regarding the occurrence of mycotoxins are summarized in Table 1 .…”

“…Reinforcing such a regulation, in a study where most of the samples were European and from finished feeds, all samples which tested positive for aflatoxins were positive for aflatoxin B1 [ 17 ]. Additionally, aflatoxin B1 was detected as the most frequent mycotoxin among non- Fusarium toxins [ 3 , 4 , 15 ], showing the importance of setting guidance levels for such a frequent mycotoxin. Specifically for corn, contamination with aflatoxin B1 was correlated with increased temperatures and precipitation close to the silking and harvesting periods of corn [ 4 ].…”

“…In sub-Saharan Africa, poultry feeds were co-contaminated with more than 21 mycotoxins and/or metabolites [ 15 ]. In the United States, most of the corn samples had co-occurrences of at least two detectable mycotoxin (≥2 mycotoxins) [ 16 ]. Similarly, co-occurrence of mycotoxins has also been observed mainly with AFs and FUMs in Latin American countries [ 17 ].…”
