The current study represents a detailed examination of the linguistic variables that are significantly related to verb-form use in contexts of future-time reference for advanced learners and native speakers of Spanish. The results show that the factors lexical temporal indicator, clause type and temporal distance are related to the verb forms that both groups use to express the function of futurity and that (un)certainty and grammatical person and number are only important for native speakers, thus demonstrating that the learners have not yet reached native-like use of this variable structure. In addition to providing more information on the variable use of futuretime reference for native and non-native speakers, the investigation makes methodological advancements in the study of morphosyntactic variation by defining a token by the function it performs in communication and by examining the full range of verb forms speakers use to fulfill this function.

This paper revisits the treatment of the expression of futurity in Spanish foreign language (FL) textbooks. We analyzed twenty college-level Spanish FL textbooks to determine and quantify how futurity is represented. Variationist research has shown the periphrastic future (PF) to be the most frequent variant of futurity followed by the simple present (SP) and the morphological future (MF). Our findings reveal that, despite over two decades of communicative language teaching, Spanish FL textbooks still do not completely present the reality of the expression of futurity. Introductory texts present all three variants of futurity. However, there is a dramatic difference in the formal representation of these three variants in intermediate texts. The PF is formally presented in only four of the ten intermediate texts analyzed. Interestingly, all ten intermediate textbooks include a formal section on the MF. From a formal treatment perspective and unlike native speaker usage, the MF continues to be the futurity variant most often presented to learners, followed by the PF, and the SP, respectively.

RESUMEN. En este artículo se analizan las principales interferencias morfosintácticas del finés en las producciones en español de escolares de dos tipos de enseñanza bilingüe: la escuela bilingüe y los cursos de mantenimiento de la lengua materna. La recolección de datos se efectuó en dos periodos distintos, separados por un tiempo de dos años. Los alumnos bilingües de primaria tienen una gran influencia de la lengua dominante, el finés, que se plasma en sus producciones lingüísticas, tanto orales como escritas. El análi-sis muestra que las principales interferencias morfosintácticas se centran en cuatro tipos distintos: errores de género, uso erróneo de preposiciones, uso erróneo de algunos verbos y del tiempo verbal y omisión de artículos. Los resultados muestran como el núme-ro de interferencias efectuadas por los escolares bilingües desciende a través del tiempo, y queda patente la relación inversamente proporcional entre el número de interferencias y competencia. Ello evidencia una adquisición incompleta de su lengua minoritaria.Palabras clave. The article analyses the main morphosyntactic interference of Finnish in the productions in Spanish of students of two types of bilingual education: bilingual school and mother tongue maintenance courses. The data collection took place in two different periods, separated by a period of two years. Bilingual students present a strong influence of the dominant language, Finnish, which is reflected in their linguistic productions, both oral and written. The analysis shows that the major morphosyntactic interferences are centred in four different types: gender errors, wrong use of prepositions, wrong use of some verbs and verbal time and omission of articles. The results show how the number of interferences carried out by bilingual schoolchildren decreases over time, revealing the inversely proportional relation between the number of interferences and competency, evidencing an incomplete acquisition of their minority language.Keywords.
