“…Models evaluating spontaneous, age-and genetically dependent prostatitis [7,8], and bacterial prostatitis [5] were followed by models demonstrating the autoimmune characteristics of the inflammation [9,10]. The model described in this paper examined the pathogenesis of inflammation from a mucosal surface perspective.…”

“…133 Currently, there is only one report that supports the autoimmune nature of sex-hormone-induced prostatitis. 134 Although these investigators used an unusually small number of in vitro activated splenocytes for the adoptive cell transfer, they reported that rat lobe-specific prostatitis can be induced in naive syngeneic recipients by adoptive transfer of spleen CD3 þ T cells from 17b-estradiol-treated male rat donors. It remains unclear whether this model of prostate inflammation is of autoimmune origin, since there is considerable evidence that 17b-estradiol is capable of inhibiting physical and histological signs of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), a mouse model of human multiple sclerosis.…”

“…The possibility of inducing prostatitis in laboratory animals by experimental manipulation of their immune system further supports this view. Thymectomy at birth [4], oestradiol administration which affects local antigen expression [5] or direct immunization with prostatic antigens in complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA) [6,7] result in typical histological infiltrates, similar to those seen in human patients [8].…”
