“…Isolates YTF1 (Frying Pan Hot Spring) and YS5-F1 (Sylvan Springs) most closely resembled Sulfobacillus strain ALV, a facultative, thermophilic iron oxidizer isolated from a coal spoil heap in Warwickshire, England (RDP similarity rank: score S~b 0.681 and 0.551, respectively). The sequences of heterotrophic isolates YTH1 and YTH2 (both from Frying Pan Hot Spring) most closely resembled sequence data (Tuorova et al, 1994) described for Sulfobacillus thermosulfidooxidans (S-ab 0.844 and 0.833, respectively). Phylogenetic relationships between these two Yellowstone isolates, the previously characterized moderately thermophilic and acidophilic heterotrophic bacteria Alicyclobacillus acidocaldarius and Alicyclobacillus acidoterrestris and the iron-oxidizer S. thermosulfidooxidans VKM B1269 are also shown in Fig.…”

“…However, phylogenetic analysis based on sequence comparisons of the 16S rRNA gene showed that species of the genus Alicyclobacillus belonged to a distinct line of descent within the low GjC Gram-positive lineage of the Bacteria that also included the closely related facultatively autotrophic species of the genus Sulfobacillus (Wisotzkey et al, 1992 ;Tourova et al, 1994 ; . The EMBL accession numbers for the 16S rRNA gene sequences of strains T and Alicyclobacillus acidoterrestris DSM 3922 T are AJ133633, AJ133632, AJ133634, AJ133635 and AJ133631, respectively.…”

“…The presence of w-cyclohexane C,, and C,, was revealed in this new organism (29). The G + C contents were found to be 53 2 1 mol% and 54 2 1 mol%, respectively, for SD-11 and S. themzosuljidooxidans, and were identical at 59 2 1 mol% for their 16s rDNA sequences (35). However many physiological differences were noted between isolate SD-ll and Sulfobacillus sp.…”

“…Even if the genera Sulfobacillus and Alicyclobacillus possess a number of distinctive phenotypic features that could justify their separation into two genera (Table 7), phylogenetic analyses confirm their close proximity (35). Since A. cycloheptanicus is found to be more related to Sulfobacillus strains than to other Alicyclobacillus strains, and because both groups share growth factor requirements (Table 7), a revision of the taxonomic nomenclature of the group at the genus level may be necessary, but this will require the description of additional species.…”
