15.1: Optically Rewritable LiquidCrystal Technology: A New Green EPaper Approach

Abstract: Optical rewritable E-paper is a valuable contribution to the green technology, as E-paper replaces usual paper with the same quality of image. The light printable rewritable paper is based on liquid crystal photoalignment and is suitable for labels and plastic card displays, price labels, E-albums, Eadvertisements.

“…The micron-sized pattern of LC alignment is difficult to achieve by rubbing but easy to achieve by photoaligning. Surface-mediated photoalignment is also effective for the fabrication of flexible and rewritable displays [31], gradientindex lenses [32], and other devices [33].…”

“…Such tunable birefringent q-plates based on electrical field controlled LC cell with special alignment (Fig.4) can found numerous applications in various fields of optics and displays. Recent developments of optical rewritable (ORW) LC photoaligning display and progress in LC photoalignment have made it possible to separate e-paper display-unit and driving optoelectronics part ( Fig.5) [6]. It has no electrodes, possesses grey scale capability, truly stable, and no power consumption of showing the image with wide viewing angles and high contrast.…”

“…So, we can obtain specified twist angle in the ORW LC cell and keep it with zero power consumption for a long time. ORW e‐paper is an optically addressed device, having no electrodes, possessing grayscale capability, being truly stable, and not requiring power to show the image with wide viewing angles and high contrast . During these days when we are in need of exploring the new source of energy and save the power consumption, it is extremely important to engineer low power‐consuming devices.…”
