An on-line dysprosium preconcentration and determination system based on the hyphenation of cloud point extraction (CPE) to flow injection analysis (FIA) associated with ICP-OES was studied. For the preconcentration of dysprosium, a Dy(III)-2-(5-bromo-2-pyridylazo)-5-diethylaminophenol complex was formed on-line at pH 9.22 in the presence of nonionic micelles of PONPE-7.5. The micellar system containing the complex was thermostated at 30 degrees C in order to promote phase separation, and the surfactant-rich phase was retained in a microcolumn packed with cotton at pH 9.2. The surfactant-rich phase was eluted with 4 mol L(-1) nitric acid at a flow rate of 1.5 mL min(-1), directly in the nebulizer of the plasma. An enhancement factor of 50 was obtained for the preconcentration of 50 mL of sample solution. The detection limit value for the preconcentration of 50 mL of aqueous solution of Dy was 0.03 microg L(-1). The precision for 10 replicate determinations at the 2.0 microg L(-1)Dy level was 2.2% relative standard deviation (RSD), calculated from the peak heights obtained. The calibration graph using the preconcentration system for dysprosium was linear with a correlation coefficient of 0.9994 at levels near the detection limits up to at least 100 microg L(-1). The method was successfully applied to the determination of dysprosium in urine.

A novel electrochemical biosensor for the determination of mercury ions in aqueous solution has been reported. The sensing substrate with a layer of gold nanoparticles on the gold electrode surface was formed through 1,6-hexanedithiol connection, which could enhance the surface loading of the capture DNA probe and improve the electron transfer performance. Another DNA probe used as mercury ion specific binding (MSB) probe hybridized with the capture probe. In the presence of mercury ions, the easy formation of thymine-Hg 2 + -thymine structure destabilized the hybrid complex and caused MSB probe released from the interface. As a result, the amount of electroactive indicator Methylene blue (MB) adsorbed by the remained DNA on the electrode surface decreased, which weakened the current signal. Therefore, the change of the redox current could reflect the concentration of the analyte. A linear relationship between the current signal and the logarithm of the target concentration up to 500 nM was obtained, with a detection limit of 0.32 nM. The fabricated sensor is shown to exhibit high sensitivity, desirable selectivity and excellent application in real sample analysis.

Abstract:A new solid -phase extraction sorbent was developed based on stepwise anchoring of two ligand molecules for the determination of copper, zinc, lead and cadmium in drinking water by flame AAS. Amberlite XAD-2 functionalized with 4´-(2-hydroxyphenylazo)-3´-methyl-1´-phenyl-2´-pyrazolin-5´-one (HPAPyr) was utilized for preconcentration/separation of these elements. The sorbent was prepared by two successive azo coupling reactions. First, 2-aminophenol was anchored to the amino groups in the resin resulted from nitration followed by reduction. Then, the resulted 2-aminophenol functionalized resin was further diazotized and coupled to the pyrazolone compound and the final product HPAPyr-XAD-2 was characterized by IR and elemental analysis. The optimum pH range for sorption, shaking time, exchange capacity, sample flow rate, preconcentration factor and interference from co-existing ions were investigated. All metal ions were quantitatively desorbed from the resin by 4.5 mol L -1 nitric acid solution. The sorbent provides limit of detection within the range 0.9-3.3 μg L -1 and concentration factor up to 250. The procedure was validated by analysis of certified material NIST-SRM 1577b.
