130 years of cyclodextrin discovery for health, food, agriculture, and the industry: a review

Abstract: Cyclodextrins are a group of cyclic oligosaccharides obtained by enzymatic degradation of starch. They are remarkable macrocyclic molecules that have led major theoretical and practical advances in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, health science, and agriculture. Their molecular structure is composed of a hydrophobic cavity that can encapsulate other compounds to form inclusion complexes through host-guest interactions. This unique feature is at the origin of many applications. Cyclodextrins and their derivat… Show more

“…Cyclodextrins (CDs) are the most versatile encapsulating agents because they have a broad application spectrum, including pharmaceutics, cosmetics, medicine, food, agriculture, chromatography, biotechnology, and nanotechnology [ 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 ]. The excellent inclusion ability of CDs is attributed to their amphipathic character and nanocavity size, stabilizing and interacting intermolecularly with various guest molecules [ 15 , 16 ].…”

“…We recently tested native cyclodextrins (CDs) as solubility promoters for the two precursors [ 21 ]; the increase in the solubility of the inorganic moiety (PbI 2 ) was detected via UV-Vis absorption, whereas NMR was chosen for studying the interactions involving MAI and the macrocycles with different size cavities (α, β and γ in ascending order). Cyclodextrins were chosen because of their well-known ability to establish host-guest interactions with organic molecules: the guest, according to its functional groups, interacts with the hydrophobic inner cavity of the CD and/or with its hydrophilic external surface, decorated by –OH groups [ 52 , 53 , 54 , 55 ].…”

“…CDs have been used in pharmaceutical formulations since the 1970s. The first pharmaceutical product containing CD, marketed in Japan in 1976, was Prostarmon E™ (prostaglandin E2:βCD) [ 4 ]. Currently, there are various commercial formulations containing CDs.…”
