This paper aimed to understand how the fields of strategy and sustainability have been related in papers published in top Brazilian management journals. An integrative review was conducted in July 2019, consisting of a qualitative approach analysis. It was found that there are nine issues that permeate the relation between sustainability and strategy, such as critical analysis, which is present in Brazilian papers but has not been identified in international reviews on this topic. This study highlights the need for critical analysis in the sustainability-strategy relationship, a little-explored perspective in both literature and practice. As well, the adoption of organizational theories that can be used to analyze the sustainability-strategy relationship. Seeking to contribute to the scientific advancement of this topic, propositions for future research are presented.

One of the main concerns of this study is to translate environmental practices into strategic actions. This paper aims to analyze how a representative segment of the Brazilian agribusiness, the Mato Grosso do Sul sugarcane industry, is dealing with environmental management at the strategic level. Three data sources were used, which are: semi-structured interviews, questionnaire, and a review of documents and reports. The analysis of interview and documents was carried out through content analysis. Data triangulation was used to combine the results of all three research tools. The methodology is the application of a sustainability assessment model. By analyzing the Brazilian sugarcane main practices, this industry still heavily emphasizes corrective actions focused both on monitoring and on controlling. However, data suggest an increasing effort towards preventive behavior and towards understanding environmental sustainability as a business strategy. This study promotes the knowledge of the indicators to measure the sustainable performance of the sugarcane energy sector. The relevance of the research is amplified considering that Brazil is one of the main countries producing sugarcane and ethanol; the socio-environmental impact of this sector; and the challenges for the measurement of sustainability in agribusiness.

Este artigo tem como objetivo identificar fatores motivadores e modos de formação de estratégias ambientais adotados por empresas pertencentes ao setor sucroalcooleiro brasileiro. Para isto, foi realizada uma pesquisa cross-sectional, com caráter descritivo, e aplicado um survey por telefone. A população da pesquisa foi formada por 364 empresas, das quais 102 compuseram a amostra. Foram utilizados, procedimentos estatísticos descritivos e univariados nas análises. Os resultaram demonstraram que o atendimento à legislação, a busca pela minimização dos impactos ambientais e valorização da imagem são os principais fatores que têm motivado os gestores para realização de investimentos em prol do meio ambiente. Evidenciou-se que o planejamento foi o modo mais adotado (75,5%) para formulação de estratégias ambientais, seguido do processual (64,74%) e guarda-chuva (55,9%), todavia, elas não são mutuamente excludentes, tampouco estas formas estão distribuídas igualmente entre as regiões do país.
