In vivo standardization of bone ultrasonometry of the clavicle

Abstract: OBJECTIVE:The assessment of fracture union includes physical examination and radiographic imaging, which depend on the examiner's experience. The development of ancillary methods may avoid prolonged treatments and the improper removal of implants. Quantitative bone ultrasonometry has been studied for this purpose and will soon be included in clinical practice. The aims of the present study were to assess the feasibility of using this technique on the clavicle and to standardize its in vivo application.METHODS:… Show more

“…QUS is not used to obtain images, but to measure and assess tissue properties (60). This modality may be used to evaluate osteoporosis (61,62) and fracture healing (63)(64)(65). QUS is a low-cost technique that has been applied at different anatomical sites, but according to the International Society for Clinical Densitometry (ISCD) official guideline (66) the only validated skeletal site is the calcaneus.…”

“…More recently nonlinear resonant ultrasound spectroscopy technique has been used to monitor fatigue cortical bone micro damage (22). Ultrasonometry may be used to identify bone fractures in experimental and in vivo studies and to monitor fracture healing (23)(24)(25)(26)(27). To our knowledge, we found no previous papers showing VA images of bone fractures.…”
