Assessment of the mechanics of a tissue-engineered rat trachea in an image-processing environment

Abstract: OBJECTIVES:Despite the recent success regarding the transplantation of tissue-engineered airways, the mechanical properties of these grafts are not well understood. Mechanical assessment of a tissue-engineered airway graft before implantation may be used in the future as a predictor of function. The aim of this preliminary work was to develop a noninvasive image-processing environment for the assessment of airway mechanics.METHOD:Decellularized, recellularized and normal tracheas (groups DECEL, RECEL, and CONT… Show more

“…Protocols of tracheal mechanics often differ and are performed in the most varied species (Table ), such as rabbits , sheep , dogs , rats , and pigs which makes it difficult to compare the results. Moreover, tracheal samples can be found in isolated parts or long segments of the organ.…”

“…Some apparatuses can complement the experimental setup of the pressure–volume relationship and also computational models can be used for the research on tracheal mechanics. Imaging devices or lasers/LEDs can be used to obtain the dimensions of the trachea during the experiment and have the advantage of not requiring mechanical intervention for the measurement. Micrometers and video images have the disadvantage of measuring only 1D or 2D, limiting to at most only one cross‐section plane at a time.…”

“…Image processing of tracheae to assist in mechanical evaluation seems to be useful as it permits both in situ and in vivo assessments, and also allows dynamic evaluation of organs and tissues without the need for physical contact . Different modalities of imaging have been used in order to find the best way to overcome limitations regarding temporal and spatial resolution …”

“…However, the cost and quality of using EVLP donor tissue in our country, and as a result, other transplants have not been performed with this technique. New research has been implemented in this area that incorporated the use of broad spectrum antibiotics during EVLP 19 and in trachea transplantation 20 , 21 .…”
