Low-intensity resistance exercise does not affect cardiac autonomic modulation in patients with peripheral artery disease

Abstract: OBJECTIVE:To analyze the effect of a single bout of resistance exercise on cardiac autonomic modulation in patients with peripheral artery disease.METHODS:Fifteen patients with peripheral artery disease (age: 58.3±4.0 years) underwent the following sessions in a random order: resistance exercise (three sets of 10 repetitions of the six resistance exercises with a workload of 5–7 in the OMNI-RES scale) and control (similar to the resistance session; however, the resistance exercises were performed with no load)… Show more

“…mentioned mechanisms also occur in these patients. In fact, we previously observed no changes in cardiac autonomic modulation [2] and increased blood flow [22] after a single REx bout in PAD patients, suggesting a peripheral role. Thus our hypothesis was that post REx hypotension is due to reduced vascular resistance subsequent to improved blood flow and reduced arterial stiffness.…”

“…Evaluating the aerobic fitness and HRV in obese adults, physical activity was positive, suggesting that physical exercise throughout life can be important for preventing diseases associated with obesity. With this, the resistance exercise has an effect on the life of patients with peripheral artery disease, improving the ability to walk, quality of life and muscular strength 17,18 . Therefore, exercise has a positive role in stimulating the improvement of the physical capacity, presenting a significant and positive relation in the quality of life 2 .…”

“…To analyze the HRV in the frequency domain, the low frequency (LF = 0.04 to 0.15 Hz) and high frequency (HF = 0.15 to 0.40 Hz) spectral components were used in ms 2 and normalized units, which represent a value relative to each spectral component related to the total power minus the very low frequency (VLF) components; we also examined the ratio between these components (LF/HF). The spectral analysis was calculated with the Fast Fourier Transform algorithm ( 13 ).…”
