Anthropometric indicators as predictors of serum triglycerides and hypertriglyceridemia in older adults

Abstract: OBJECTIVES: To compare the relation between anthropometric indicators and serum triglycerides, and to identify the indicators most strongly associated with hypertriglyceridemia in older adults. METHODS: A population-based, cross-sectional study conducted with 316 subjects ($60 years old) in 2011. The following were checked: triglycerides, body mass index, waist-to-hip ratio, waist-to-height ratio, conicity index, body adiposity index, triceps skinfold thickness, and waist and calf circumference. RESULTS: Linea… Show more

“…This study also revealed that BMI-based screening of triglyceride was applicable when compared with other anthropometric measurements. 16 Likewise, other hospital-based studies done in India, Canada and others indicated presence of correlation between BMI and lipid profiles. [17][18][19] However, in this study no significant association was observed between local BMI cut-off points and other lipid profiles like high and low density lipoprotein.…”

“…Study done in India among adult population (≤ 60 years old) and aged group of population in Brazil (60 years old and above) revealed that anthropometric indices of waist to hip ratio was the best indicators for screening dyslipidemia (TG). 16,22 This discrepancy might be due to the difference in sample size, age difference or ethnic differences, which can be addressed by a large scale and multi-centered study involving different populations.…”

“…This may be associated with a lack of physical activity, resulting in a variety of consequences, such as, for instance, cardio-metabolic disorders. Anthropometric indicators have been successfully applied to predict serum triglycerides and hypertriglyceridemia n older adults; 14 They have likewise been used to compare conditions of older adults in distinct regions of Brazil. 15 The objective of this study was to verify the prevalence of people being overweight, relate the eating habits and physical activity levels to gender in students 7 to 13 years old, and to compare their dietary habits and level of physical activity with those of their parents.…”
