Background: Fibromyalgia is a chronic disorder characterized by widespread muscular tenderness, pain, fatigue, and cognitive difficulties. Nonpharmacological treatment options, such as physical activity, are important for people with fibromyalgia. There are strong recommendations to support engagement in physical activity for symptom management among adults with fibromyalgia. Dance is a mode of physical activity that may allow individuals with fibromyalgia to improve their physical function, health, and well-being. Dance has the potential to promote improved pain processing while simultaneously providing the health and social benefits of engaging in physical activity that contributes to symptom management and overall function rehabilitation. However, we are unaware of current evidence on dance as a nonpharmacological/physical activity intervention for adults with fibromyalgia.Objective: The aims of this study were to understand how dance is used therapeutically by individuals with fibromyalgia; to examine the extent, range and nature of research activity in the area; and to determine the value of undertaking a systematic review of interventions. Methods:We used and adapted the Arksey and O'Malley scoping framework. The search strategy involved a comprehensive search of main health and electronic social databases, trial registries and grey literature without language limits. Pairs of reviewers independently screened and extracted data and evaluated the methodological quality of randomized control trials.Results: Twenty-one unique records for 13 studies met inclusion criteria; the studies included mostly middle-aged women. Types of dance included were aerobic dance, belly dance, dance movement therapy, biodanza and Zumba. Intervention parameters were different among studies. Frequency varied between one to three times a week; all were done in small group settings. Studies evaluated a variety of outcomes in the symptoms, wellness, psychosocial, physical functioning, balance and fitness categories; no studies evaluated the safety or adverse events systematically which is a major weakness of the literature. Conclusions:There are few studies in the field of dance and fibromyalgia, suggesting research is in its infancy but slowly growing. They are of European and South American origin, focusing on female participants and a limited number of dance modes. Because the body of literature is small, of low quality and highly heterogeneous, we concluded that a systematic review of interventions on dance is not warranted at this time.

Introdução: A fibromialgia apresenta-se como uma condição clínica reumatológica que é tida como uma síndrome dolorosa crônica. Dentre os sintomas destaca-se a dor, fadiga muscular, dificuldades para dormir, rigidez matinal e distúrbios cognitivos. Os exercícios podem auxiliar esses indivíduos na preservação da aptidão física e aumento da endorfina que juntos irão proporcionar uma melhora nana qualidade de vidas desses pacientes. Objetivos: avaliar os tipos de exercícios aeróbicos, em relação à frequência, intensidade e duração e os benefícios na redução do limiar da dor na fibromialgia. Métodos: o presente estudo trata-se de uma revisão sistemática. Onde as buscas foram realizadas através das bases de dados SciELO, PubMed, PEDro, Periódicos CAPES, LILACS e busca ativa das referências. Foram selecionados estudos que estivessem relacionados ao público feminino, ensaios clínicos, e estudos que tenham a dor como desfecho primário. Nos idiomas inglês e português. Resultados: Os estudos relacionados ao exercício aeróbico em pacientes com FM demostraram benefícios na redução da dor. Os mesmos evidenciaram que os pacientes que utilizaram o exercício aeróbico em seus protocolos contemplaram ganhos significativos na redução da sintomatologia dolorosa da FM. Conclusão: Sugere-se que o exercício aeróbico como tratamento não medicamentoso colabora com a redução da sintomatologia dolorosa em pacientes fibromiálgicos, desde que respeitem os limites de intensidade, frequências e duração desses indivíduos.

Objective: To establish the effect of therapeutic dance and physical exercise on the symptomatology and number of painful points in women with fibromyalgia. Materials and methods: Quasi-experimental study that considered a randomized probabilistic sample. A total of 37 women with fibromyalgia underwent therapeutic dance (n=18) and physical exercise (n=19) programs. The average age was 47.4 ± 8.4 years. The length of the intervention was 3 months with a training frequency of 2 sessions per week and a duration of 60 minutes per session. All the participants provided information that allowed to determine the general pain index (GPI) and the scale of symptom severity (SSS). Results: Therapeutic dance and physical exercise significantly decreased the number of painful points (from 12.1 ± 2.8 to 7.3 ± 3.1 for pre-and post-values respectively (p = 0.000)) and the symptoms associated with fibromyalgia (8.7 ± 2.3 to 5.7 ± 2.6 for pre-and post-values respectively (p = 0.000)). Conclusions: Therapeutic dance and physical exercise have an equivalent beneficial effect on the reduction of the general pain index, depression, cognitive symptoms and sleep disorders in women with fibromyalgia.
