Clinical and epidemiological prevalence of glomerulopathies in older patients in the city of Uberaba - MG

Abstract: Through this review, we noted that the nephrotic syndrome was the main clinical syndrome and Podocytophaties glomerulopathies were more prevalent in the group of elderly patients undergoing renal biopsy. The analysis of renal biopsies of elderly patients is of paramount importance, since knowledge of the clinical manifestations of major glomerulopathies that affect this group, to assist in establishing the diagnosis and therapeutic management.

“…The present study demonstrated that the major clinical manifestations of biopsy-proven kidney diseases in the elderly were proteinuria and haematuria. NS was a common clinical manifestation (62.5%) in the elderly patients that were investigated in this present study, which was consistent with another report, 13 although the rate was a little higher in the present cohort. This difference in the rate of NS might be related to the reluctance of clinicians to undertake renal biopsies, patient’s preference, and life expectancy.…”

“…There are also local studies that have evaluated specific populations, either by city or by age group, with fewer biopsies. [6][7][8] Due to the wide ethnic and socioeconomic diversity throughout Brazil, it is of considerable interest to gain knowledge regarding the regional peculiarities of glomerular diseases.…”

“…In these cases, renal biopsy is an important method to confirm the etiology of this glomerular disease 2 . In Brazil, data regarding trends in glomerular and nonglomerular nephropathies confirmed by means of a renal biopsy are still limited to certain regions of the country [3][4][5][6] or based on sampling from hospitals/ nephrology centers 3,5,[7][8][9][10][11][12][13] . In Santa Catarina, there are no population data that can contribute to a better epidemiological understanding of the prevalence of nephropathies diagnosed through renal biopsy.…”
