RESUMOEste trabalho objetivou comparar sete diferentes tipos de modelos hipsométricos que melhor se ajustassem para estimação das alturas da espécie Mimosa tenuiflora (Willd.) Poir. Foram alocadas 33 parcelas de área fixa, resultando em 1.743 indivíduos amostrados, representando uma densidade de 1.320,5 ind.ha -1 , os indivíduos foram distribuídos em 24 espécies, 22 gêneros e 14 famílias botânicas. A família Fabaceae representou 58,23 % dos indivíduos e entre as espécies de maior valor de importância encontra-se a Mimosa tenuiflora. A eficiência dos modelos foi avaliada por meio do coeficiente de determinação ajustado (), erro padrão residual (Syx), erro percentual absoluto médio (EPAM), erro médio quadrático (EMQ) e análise gráfica dos resíduos. Conclui-se que entre os modelos testados, o maior valor de R²= 0,3078 foi obtido pelo modelo 7, já o modelo 3 apresentou o menor ajuste para estimar a altura da espécie. The large amount of degraded areas and productive potential of the legal reserves in Brazil make restoration an environmental demand and a commercial opportunity. We modelled the diameter growth as a function of age of eight tree species in restoration plantations in the Brazilian Amazon. From 14 years of annual forest inventory data, for each species, we tested variations of logistic function: simple logistic, logistic with covariant (plant area at the time of planting), logistic with random effect, logistic with random effect and covariant. Amongst the studied species, Schizolobium parahyba var. amazonicum, Tectona grandis and Simarouba amara showed the highest growth rates while Cordia alliodora, Cedrela odorata and three species of the genus Handroanthus showed slower growth. The gains from using the covariant in modeling were small for both fixed and mixed-effect models. Gains from the inclusion of the random effect were substantial. Mixed-effect models had the best performance in modeling the growth of the species. Our results provide basis for a critical view of the criteria and possibilities for degraded areas restoration and management practices in legal reserves of the Amazon. An economic analysis is required to ensure the viability of these areas’ sustainable exploitation.

This study aimed to evaluate the response of Toona ciliata seedlings to sublethal doses of glyphosate. The increasing use of glyphosate in agriculture concerns the scientific community, as the drift of this pollutant into aquatic systems or atmospheric currents can affect non-target species. Therefore, we need to understand how non-target species respond to small doses of this herbicide. T. ciliata seedlings (clone BV-1110) were exposed to sublethal doses of glyphosate (0, 9.6, 19.2, 38.4, 76.8 g ae ha−1). Anatomical, physiological, and photochemical analyses were performed 60 days after herbicide application, and growth assessments were carried out after 160 days of cultivation. We found that sublethal doses of glyphosate above 19.2 g ae ha−1 induced toxicity symptoms in Toona ciliata leaves. These symptoms were mild in some cases, such as chlorosis, but severe in other cases, such as tissue necrosis. We observed a positive relationship between increased plant height and photochemical yield with plant exposure to sub-doses 9.6 and 19.2 g ae ha−1. A sublethal dose of 38.4 g ae ha−1 improved the photosynthetic rate and carboxylation efficiency. Thus, we confirmed the hypothesis of a hormetic effect when T. ciliata was exposed to sub-doses of glyphosate equal to or lower than 38.4 g ae ha−1. However, the sublethal dose of 76.8 g ae ha−1 must be considered toxic, impacting photosynthetic activity and, consequently, the height of T. ciliata. The stem diameter of T. ciliata responded positively to increasing glyphosate doses. This occurs to compensate for the negative effect of glyphosate on water absorption. Further research will provide valuable information for harnessing the potential benefits of hormesis to improve the productivity of T. ciliata.
