Pregerminative treatments of yellow mombin (<i>Spondias mombin</i> L.) seeds

Show more

“…The unconvincing and contradictory results of diaspores scarification to promote germination of hog plum seeds (SILVA, 2003;OYEBAMIJI et al, 2014;FADIMU et al, 2014;MARTINS et al, 2019) are due to the fact that dormancy is not caused by impediments to water absorption. Increases in the percentage and germination speed eventually observed are due, in most cases, to the variation that exists in the mechanical resistance degree of the endocarp among diaspores in the same batch.…”

“…For Silva (2003), Oyebamiji et al, (2014) and Fadimu et al (2014) immersion of diaspores in water or mechanical scarification provide significant increases in the germination percentage and reduction in the time required for seeds to germinate. On the other hand, Martins et al (2019) found that these pre-germinative treatments have little or no effect on seed germination. In these studies, the authors did not discriminate the time elapsed between the drying of the diaspores and the application of pre-germinative treatments, which is an important factor in overcoming dormancy (AZEVEDO et al, 2004).…”

“…1) (Lozano, 1986;Azevedo et al, 2004;Niembro-Rocas et al, 2010). The endocarp represents a physical barrier that, while it protects seeds from possible environmental aggressions (e.g., extreme temperatures, fungi, bacteria, and pre- dation) (Soriano and Martínez-Villegas, 2019), establishes physical dormancy; since its hardness limits embryo expansion, gas exchange and/or water absorption, rendering germination a slow and irregular process (Baskin et al, 2000;Martins et al, 2019;Magalhães de Souza et al, 2020). In order to break this type of dormancy and promote germination, it is necessary to fracture this layer and, in nature, rupture can happen via abrasion by animal ingestion (Delgado-Sánchez et al, 2011;Baskin and Baskin, 2014).…”

“…Despite this, large-scale cultivation of this fruit is a challenge yet, mainly because its diaspores have strong dormancy, blocking the germination, and hindering the commercial establishment of crops. Some attempts to overrule this problem has been made (SOUZA et al, 2015;MARTINS et al, 2019), however its results are at best doubtful yet. Fuelling this issue, it is not clear what is the nature of this dormancy, therefore producers don´t know what kind of pre-germinative treatment apply to overcome this problem.…”
