The beggartick (Bidens subalternans L.) is one of the main weeds present in agricultural crops, capable of adapting to different environmental conditions. The water stress caused by water deficiency can affect the germination of weed seeds and, consequently, their capacity to colonize the agroecosystem. Knowledge of germination under water stress can be important to obtain an adequate management of the species in the agricultural systems. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of water stress on the germination process and vigor of two batches of Bidens subalternans seeds under different osmotic agents. It was completely randomized experimental design was used, with four replicates of 25 seeds. The treatments were arranged in factorial 6 × 2, with the first factor corresponding six levels of osmotic potentials (0.0, -0.2, -0.4, -0.6, -0.8 and -1.0 MPa) and the second the batches (Pernambuco and Ceará). For the simulation of the water stress, the test of germination was installed in substrate paper blotting, moistened with solutions of polyethylene glycol (PEG 6000) and mannitol. The analyzed variables were germination, germination speed index, length and seedling dry mass. Water stress reduced germination, seed vigor and growth of seedlings in all batches of B. subalternans. Seeds of B. subalternans presented greater tolerance to stress induced by mannitol than to PEG-6000 in terms of germination and germination speed index. Regardless of the osmotic agent used for stress induction, B. subalternans seeds did not tolerate water stress higher than -0.4 MPa.

RESUMO:Leucaena leucocephala (Lam.) de Wit (Fabaceae) é uma espécie arbórea de ampla utilização no mundo, principalmente para a alimentação de ruminantes em regiões de clima semiárido. Dada sua relevância, o objetivo neste estudo foi avaliar os efeitos dos estresses hídrico e térmico sobre a germinação e o vigor de sementes de L. leucocephala. O experimento foi instalado em arranjo fatorial 3 x 4, considerando os fatores potencial hídrico (0,0; -0,3 e -0,6 MPa) e temperatura (25, 30, 35 e 40 °C) sobre o desempenho germinativo das sementes. As variáveis avaliadas foram: germinação, plântulas anormais, primeira contagem de germinação, índice de velocidade de germinação e o desempenho das plântulas (comprimento e massa seca de raiz e parte aérea). A diminuição do potencial hídrico a partir de -0,3 MPa reduziu a germinação e o vigor das sementes, indicando que a tolerância da espécie ao estresse hídrico na fase de germinação é baixa. A faixa térmica de 25-30 °C é ideal para germinação e crescimento inicial de plântulas, mas as sementes continuam a germinar com a elevação térmica até 35 °C. As sementes de L. leucocephala são pouco tolerantes aos estresses hídrico e térmico e, consequentemente, a capacidade germinativa e o vigor são reduzidos com a diminuição do potencial hídrico a partir de -0,3 MPa e temperaturas acima de 30 °C.Palavras-chave: ecofisiologia; leucena; sementes florestais; semiárido; vigor Water and thermal stress on the germination Leucaena leucocephala (Lam.) de Wit seeds ABSTRACT: Leucaena leucocephala (Lam.) de Wit (Fabaceae) is an arboreal species of wide use in the world, mainly for feeding ruminants in semiarid climate regions. Given its relevance, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of water and thermal stress on the germination and vigor of L. leucocephala seeds. The experiment was installed in 3 x 4 factorial arrangement, considering the water potential (0.0, -0.3 and -0.6 MPa) and temperature (25, 30, 35 and 40 °C) factors on the seeds germination performance. The variables evaluated were: germination, abnormal seedlings, first germination count, germination speed index and seedling performance (length and dry mass weight of root and aerial part). The reduction of the water potential from -0.3 MPa reduced the germination and seed vigor, indicating that the tolerance of the species to water stress in the germination phase is low. The temperature range of 25-30 °C is ideal for germination and seedlings initial growth, but the seeds continue to germinate under a temperature elevation to 35 °C. The L. leucocephala seeds are poorly tolerant to water and thermal stresses and, consequently, the germinative capacity and vigor are reduced with decreasing water potential from -0.3 MPa and temperatures above 30 °C.

Seeds are exposed to diverse environmental factors when dispersed, including abiotic stresses, which will affect germination. Drought is the most important factor affecting germination, since water is essential for seed development. Aspidosperma polyneuron is a native endangered species which has been extensively exploited, mainly for timber extraction purposes. This study analyzed germination and degradation of soluble sugars and proteins of A. polyneuron seeds during germination under water stress. Seeds were placed on Germitest papers moistened with different water potential solutions, varying from 0.0 to -1.4 MPa. Degradation of soluble sugars and soluble proteins was assessed in five stages of germination at the different water potentials. A. polyneuron seeds lost germination capacity as the water potential decreased, being unable to germinate below -0.6 MPa. Glutelin was the most abundant storage protein in the seed, while prolamin was the least. Reserve degradation was altered in negative water potentials. Soluble proteins are degraded faster and soluble sugars are degraded slower as the water potential drops.Efeito do estresse hídrico na germinação e degradação de reservas de sementes de Aspidosperma polyneuron RESUMO: Quando dispersas, as sementes são expostas à diversos fatores ambientais, incluindo estresses abióticos, os quais irão afetar sua germinação. A seca é o fator mais limitante que afeta a germinação, já que a água é essencial para o desenvolvimento da semente. Aspidosperma polyneuron é uma espécie nativa em perigo de extinção, extensamente explorada para extração madeireira. Este estudo analisou a germinação e degradação de açúcares e proteínas solúveis de A. polyneuron durante a germinação sob estresse hídrico. Sementes foram dispostas em papéis Germitest umedecidos com soluções em diferentes potenciais hídricos, que variaram de 0,0 à -1,4 MPa. A degradação de açúcares e proteínas solúveis foi avaliada em cinco estágios de germinação nos diferentes potenciais hídricos. Sementes de A. polyneuron perderam capacidade germinativa conforme o potencial hídrico diminuiu, não germinando abaixo de -0,6 MPa. Glutelina foi a proteína de armazenamento mais abundante na semente, enquanto prolamina a menos presente. A degradação de reservas foi alterada em potenciais hídricos negativos, sendo que as proteínas solúveis foram degradadas mais rapidamente e os açúcares mais lentamente conforme o potencial hídrico diminuiu.Palavras-chave: espécie nativa; embebição de sementes; proteínas solúveis; açúcares solúveis; potencial hídrico Drought stress effects on germination and reserve degradation of Aspidosperma polyneuron seeds Rev.
