Aspidosperma pyrifolium Mart. (Apocynaceae) is a tree species with high ecological and economic potential. Therefore, the need to select trees for producing high-quality seeds is evident. In this sense, the objective of this study was to select A. pyrifolium matrices based on the morphometric descriptors of fruits and seeds and the physiological quality of seeds from a natural population. For this, 11 A. pyrifolium trees were selected, and their fruits and seeds were submitted to biometric analysis; in addition, the physiological quality of the seeds was evaluated. The morphometric characteristics of fruits and seeds and the physiological quality of the seeds evidenced differences and variations among the seeds of the different A. pyrifolium trees, making it possible to group them according to the similarity degree. Thus, seven trees were selected as seed matrices based on superior physiological quality and genetic dissimilarity.
Mimosa caesalpiniifolia Benth. (Fabaceae) is a native tree of the dry tropical forests of northeastern Brazil and can be exploited for logging and reforestation purposes. This study evaluated the physiological quality of seeds and the genetic diversity of a cultivated population of M. caesalpiniifolia, against the background of potential commercial seed production. Nine trees were used in the study. The quality of their seeds was evaluated by germination and vigour tests, and their genetic diversity was accessed using Inter Simple Sequence Repeat (ISSR). The studied tree group presents a moderate genetic diversity and produces seeds with high physiological quality, but with subtle vigour differences, which can be detected by electrical conductivity and potassium leaching tests. Our results suggest that these trees are potentially suitable for commercial seed production.
Germination and vigor of Capparis flexuosa L. seeds submitted to salt stress ABSTRACTCapparis flexuosa L. is a forest species found in the Caatinga biome, which can be used to recover salinized soils. The aim of this study was to evaluate the germination and vigor of Capparis flexuosa seeds submitted to salt stress. The experimental design was completely randomized with treatments corresponding to the increasing levels of NaCl (0, 25, 50, 100, 200 and 400 mM) and four replications of 25 seeds each. The following parameters were evaluated: germination; first germination count; germination speed index (GSI); and length of the root and hypocotyl of the seedlings. The 200 mM concentration of salt provided good results for the germination percentage (79%) and did not influence seeds vigor evaluated by the seedlings performance on the first germination count (72%), GSI (3,87), root (1,28 cm) and hypocotyl length (1,8 cm). The seeds present the characteristic germination performance of halophyte plants, once they are highly tolerant to sodium chloride.
As sementes de L. leucocephala são pouco tolerantes aos estresses hídrico e térmico e, consequentemente, a capacidade germinativa e o vigor são reduzidos com a diminuição do potencial hídrico a partir de -0,3 MPa e temperaturas acima de 30 °C.Palavras-chave: ecofisiologia; leucena; sementes florestais; semiárido; vigor Water and thermal stress on the germination Leucaena leucocephala (Lam.) de Wit seeds ABSTRACT: Leucaena leucocephala (Lam.) de Wit (Fabaceae) is an arboreal species of wide use in the world, mainly for feeding ruminants in semiarid climate regions. Given its relevance, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of water and thermal stress on the germination and vigor of L. leucocephala seeds. The experiment was installed in 3 x 4 factorial arrangement, considering the water potential (0.0, -0.3 and -0.6 MPa) and temperature (25, 30, 35 and 40 °C) factors on the seeds germination performance. The variables evaluated were: germination, abnormal seedlings, first germination count, germination speed index and seedling performance (length and dry mass weight of root and aerial part). The reduction of the water potential from -0.3 MPa reduced the germination and seed vigor, indicating that the tolerance of the species to water stress in the germination phase is low. The temperature range of 25-30 °C is ideal for germination and seedlings initial growth, but the seeds continue to germinate under a temperature elevation to 35 °C. The L. leucocephala seeds are poorly tolerant to water and thermal stresses and, consequently, the germinative capacity and vigor are reduced with decreasing water potential from -0.3 MPa and temperatures above 30 °C.
