Morphological and phenological characters are used in the selection, breeding, and description of plant varieties with varying genotypes. The stability of these descriptors in the face of environmental changes can determine their usefulness in situations where plant varieties must be reliably identified. The objective of this study was to verify the expression of morphological and phenological descriptors and use them to distinguish between white oat cultivars (Avena sativa L.) in two growing periods. For this, five cultivars, protected and belonging to four breeders, referred to as G1, G2, G3, G4, and G5, were sown in the typical growing season in southern Brazil (autumn-winter) and outside that period (winter-spring), and grown for forty days. The experiment was established in the field, in a randomized block design replicated three times. The cultivars were evaluated for 42 descriptors (15 quantitative and 27 qualitative). Quantitative data were analyzed by analysis of variance, the comparison of averages, and multivariate analysis by generating average euclidean distances. Qualitative data were analyzed by mode determination, followed by obtaining the similarity index. The relationship between cultivars was illustrated by dendrograms. The stability index for each descriptor was calculated. A genotype x environment interaction was observed for 28 descriptors. The stability of descriptor appearance and persistence over the growing season was higher in qualitative (44%) than in quantitative (7%) descriptors. The most stable qualitative descriptors were lemma color, hairiness of the upper node, flag leaf position, hairiness of the base of the grain, basal grain length, and rachilla length. The most stable quantitative descriptor was flag leaf length. Shifting the white oat growing season from autumn-winter to winter-spring reduced the cycle and modified the expression of most descriptors by changing the phenotypic distinctness between cultivars. Este trabalho foi desenvolvido com o objetivo de verificar a expressão de descritores morfológicos e fenológicos e, consequentemente, a dissimilaridade entre cultivares de aveia-branca (Avena sativa L.) em dois períodos de cultivo. RESUMO:A produtividade do arroz é definida por variáveis de ordem ambiental e genética, e o estudo da fenologia e do desenvolvimento da planta é de grande importância para poder explicar essas interações. Neste trabalho buscou-se estudar o comportamento em genótipos de tipos especiais de arroz pelos métodos de comparação de características morfológica, dos componentes de produção e adicionalmente pela análise de trilha nas variedades de arroz vermelho, branco e preto. O experimento foi conduzido no campus da UFRRJ, Seropédica-RJ, no ano agrícola de 2016/2017. Os genótipos avaliados foram dois de arroz vermelho ("ENA-AR 1601" e "Vermelho Virgínia") um de arroz branco ("BRS Esmeralda") e outro de arroz preto ("IAC 600"). Foram avaliadas nove características morfoagronômicas. O delineamento foi o em blocos ao acaso em parcelas subdivididas, com quatro repetições. Os tratamentos nas parcelas foram os quatro genótipos de arroz e nas subparcelas as duas colheitas (principal e soca). Após a análise de variância foram realizados o teste de médias, as correlações fenotípicas e a análise de trilha. Foi possível observar redução da produtividade de arroz da colheita principal para a soca. A maior estatura observada foi no genótipo "Vermelho Virgínia", sendo uma característica a ser melhorada nesse genótipo. Constatou-se que as características número de espiguetas viáveis por panícula e o número de perfilhos viáveis apresentaram a maior correlação positiva como efeito direto a variável produtividade dos genótipos de arroz na colheita principal. This paper aimed to evaluate the genetic diversity of upland rice varieties, determine the components that contributes most to productivity and evaluate the yield of varieties grown in conventional and organic farming systems. The experiment was carried out during the 2011/2012, 2012/2013 and 2013/2014 crop years, with 11 local upland rice varieties (Agulha, Rosa 15, Mato Grosso, Gomes, Preto, Argentino, Kinsel, Camilo, Piriquito, Casca Roxa and Caipira) and two commercial varieties (Primavera and Cambará). Genetic diversity was observed among the varieties for all evaluated variables and the thousand grain weight was the character that contributed most to the divergence between varieties. The number of panicles m-2 was the yield component that presented the highest association with grain yield of varieties in organic farming systems. The average yield of the varieties was 2.303, 1.711 and 3.534 kg ha-1 for the seasons 1, 2 and 3 respectively, and the highest yields were obtained with earlier sowing and temperature during grains maturation about 20°C. The ‘Piriquito’, ‘Argentino’, ‘Gomes’ and ‘Kinsel’ varieties presented yield above 2.000 kg ha-1 for all seasons, in both systems, indicating better adaptation to the region of the study and can be indicated as the most promising for the crop under organic cultivation.
