Considering the importance of health risk behaviors (HRB) and the need for reliable instruments to evaluate them, this study was designed to evaluate the psychometric properties of the items of the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) in a sample of 902 college students. Convergent validity, criterion, internal consistency, and temporal stability were evaluated. Higher correlations were observed between use of other drugs and use of marijuana (ρ = 0.537), and alcohol consumption and tobacco use (ρ = 0.418). Criterion validity was observed, with significant differences between domain scores according to gender. Adequate internal consistency, Cronbach's alpha = 0.770 for overall scale. Most of the domains (82%) showed intraclass correlation coefficient ≥ 0.75 and 64.1% of the items showed kappa ≥ 0.60. The instrument seems to have indicators of criterion validity, internal consistency and temporal stability with satisfactory levels. We recommend that HRB assessment using YRBS should be performed separately on each domain. Resumo:Considerando-se a importância dos comportamentos de risco à saúde (CRS) e a necessidade de instrumentos confiáveis para avaliá-los, este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar as propriedades psicométricas dos itens do Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) em uma amostra de 902 universitários. Foram avaliadas validade convergente, critério, consistência interna e estabilidade temporal. Observaramse maiores correlações: uso de outras drogas e uso de maconha (ρ = 0,537), consumo de bebida alcóolica e uso de tabaco (ρ = 0,418). Constatou-se validade de critério, com diferenças significativas entre escores dos domínios segundo o sexo. Consistência interna adequada, alfa de Cronbach = 0,770 para escala geral. A maioria dos domínios (82%) apresentou coeficiente de correlação intraclasse ≥ 0,75 e 64,1% dos itens apresentaram kappa ≥ 0,60. O instrumento parece apresentar indicadores de validade de critério, consistência interna e estabilidade temporal com níveis satisfatórios. Recomenda-se que avaliação dos CRS, por meio do YRBS, seja realizada por domínios separadamente. BackgroundGlobally, inequality between men and women manifests in a variety of ways. In particular, gender inequality increases the risk of perpetration of violence against women (VAW), especially intimate partner violence (IPV), by males. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 35 % of women have experienced physical, psychological and/or sexual IPV at least once in their lives, making IPV unacceptably common. In 2006, the Maria da Penha Law on Domestic and Family Violence, became the first federal law to regulate VAW and punish perpetrators in Brazil. This study examines the relationship between Brazilian VAW legislation and male perpetration of VAW by comparing reported prevalence of IPV before and after the enactment of the Maria da Penha Law.MethodsTo assess changes in magnitude of IPV before and after the law, we used data from the 2013 Brazilian National Health Survey; we replicated the analyses conducted for the WHO Multi-Country Study on Women’s Health and Domestic Violence Against Women-whose data were collected before the passage of the Maria da Penha Law. We compare findings from the two studies.ResultsOur analyses show an increase in the reported prevalence of physical violence, and a decrease in the reported prevalence of sexual and psychological violence. The increase may result from an actual increase in physical violence, increased awareness and reporting of physical violence, or a combination of both factors. Additionally, our analysis revealed that in the urban setting of São Paulo, physical violence was more likely to be severe and occur in the home; meanwhile, in the rural state of Pernambuco, physical violence was more likely to be moderate in nature and occur in public.ConclusionThe Maria da Penha Law increased attention and resources for VAW response and prevention; however, its true impact remains unmeasured. Our data suggest a need for regular, systematic collection of comparable population-based data to accurately estimate the true prevalence of IPV in Brazil. Furthermore, such data may inform policy and program planning to address specific needs across diverse settings including rural and urban communities. If routinely collected over time, such data can be used to develop policies and programs that address all forms of IPV, as well as evidence-based programs that address the social and cultural norms that support other forms of VAW and gender inequality.

Resumo. Mortes de crianças e adolescentes (CA) por causas externas são um importante problema mundial de saúde pública. Para uma melhor compreensão epidemiológica destes óbitos este estudo analisou laudos necroscópicos forenses de CA vítimas alegadas de acidentes e homicídios no período de 2006 a 2012 periciadas no Instituto Médico Legal de Belo Horizonte. Os homicídios compreenderam 65% dos 2.462 laudos de menores de 18 anos estudados. O trauma penetrante ("tiros" e "facadas") foi mais prevalente nos homicídios (93%) enquanto o não penetrante prevaleceu nos acidentes (99%) (p<0,05). As vítimas de "tiros" foram mais frequentes que as de "facadas" e foi observada média de 4,8 lesões de entradas de projéteis por autopsia naquelas. Os acidentes mais comuns foram os de trânsito e os afogamentos. O final de semana foi o período com o maior número de necropsias tanto de homicídios como de acidentes e a faixa etária de 12 a 17 anos concentrou o maior número de casos. A idade média foi de 10,6 anos nos acidentes e de 15,5 nos assassinados (p<0,05). A maior proporção de óbitos por homicídio foi na faixa de
