Psychometric Properties of the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) Instrument in Brazilian College Students

Abstract: Considering the importance of health risk behaviors (HRB) and the need for reliable instruments to evaluate them, this study was designed to evaluate the psychometric properties of the items of the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) in a sample of 902 college students. Convergent validity, criterion, internal consistency, and temporal stability were evaluated. Higher correlations were observed between use of other drugs and use of marijuana (ρ = 0.537), and alcohol consumption and tobacco use (ρ = 0.418). Crite… Show more

“…Hence, further exploration of such determinants specifically linked to Malaysian adolescents is critically warranted because inconsistent findings were reported worldwide. In line with the most recent local literature by Tan et al in 2019, which similarly determined the prevalence and factors associated with peer victimisation in Malaysia and emphasised the linkage between victimisation and tobacco use; alcohol and substance abuse; violence and physical fight involvement 19 . However, the present study has further investigated the psychosocial entanglement in depth besides an extension of the minutiae discussion on parental influence as a major protective factor.…”

“…A higher total score indicates higher indulgence in these behaviors. Lima, Maia, Brito, Pinho and Silveira (2020), in a study on a large sample, found satisfactory psychometric properties of this questionnaire; Cronbach's alpha was 0.77 for the overall scale, and the intraclass correlation coefficient between different domains were more than 0.75. Some representative items of the questionnaire are: “During the past 30 days, how many times did you drive/ride a car/scooter or another vehicle faster than the prescribed speed limit”; “During the past seven days, on how many days were you physically active for a total of at least 60 minutes per day?”; “During the past seven days, on how many days did you eat meals on time?” For the present sample, the Cronbach alpha for the total health‐risk behaviors score was found to be 0.73, and domain‐wise it ranged from 0.69 to 0.78.…”
