Construction of a Morphing Wing Rib Actuated by a NiTi Wire

Abstract: The main goal of this paper is to analyze if it is feasible to employ a trained shape memory alloy wire as a linear actuator to modify the camber of a morphing wing rib. In order to achieve this purpose, a morphing rib with a compliant trailing edge was proposed, developed, and subjected to structural analyses to ensure its flexibility. After the rib configuration was set, it was manufactured by a 3-D printer. The NiTi wire used as actuator was trained by a thermomechanical procedure based on a cycling process… Show more

“…The total deflection results presented in figure 17 are compatible with results obtained by other researchers, respecting the proportions and purpose for which the prototype is intended [1,37,[50][51][52]. The maximum deflection obtained for the maximum speed tested (14 m s −1 ) was of the order of 23°, activating all the sections simultaneously.…”

“…For instance, Strelec et al [15] used SMA wires to change the airfoil profiles using Joule heating as input. Alameida et al [16] developed a morphing wing rib actuated by SMA wires. Sofia et al [17] developed a concept wing that uses SMA wires as a part of a bio-inspired vertebrate structure.…”

“…In this paper, a new, fiber-optic interferometric technique capable of accurate and precise measurement of the deflection of the aircraft's morphing wing is presented. The guiding conditions for definition of the maximum deflection magnitude of ±5°and required accuracy of 0.1°come from the initial technical demands and aerodynamic analysis of morphing wing airfoil, carried out from the literature [18].…”
