Studies on compatibility of energetic materials by thermal methods

Abstract: 3,4, and HMX (Cyclotetramethylene tetranitramine) was studied with the materials: fluoroelastomer (Viton) and powdered aluminum (Al), using DSC and VST methods. The criteria to judge the compatibility between materials is based on a standardization agreement (STANAG 4147, 2001), and the final conclusion is that explosives and this materials are compatible, but in DSC it was observed that the peak of decomposition temperature of the admixture of RDX with Al decreased in 3º C and another peak appeared after the … Show more

“…Compatibility studies of DBX‐1 with a variety of output powders, bridgewire materials and component metals were conducted by both metal coupon and DSC test methods 21, 22. Metal coupon testing was done by putting a small sample of DBX‐1 powder in contact with the coupon and placing the coupon in a humidity chamber at 93 % RH (saturated potassium nitrate) at ambient temperature (18–25 °C).…”

“…It reveals that viton has good thermal stability up to 450 °C. Qi-long yan and coworkers have reported the decomposition temperature for viton A as 462 °C 13 . DTA curves of RDX and RDX/viton mixture fig.…”

“…Higher sample size increases the possibility of physical contact in between the materials tested, and ensures the reliability. On the other hand, the foremost advantages of using DSC and TGA methods are to make experiments quicker and safer . However, TGA and DSC methods are suitable for the testing of primary explosives and pyrotechnics, their applicability for propellants, and PBX can be questioned.…”
