Physical inactivity is currently a significant problem in Western societies. Among the many factors that affect the amount of physical activity in children, socioeconomic status, the type of school, and the area where they live can play a major role in physical development. A total of 31,620 children (6.3 ± 0.53 years; 15,726 boys; 15,893 girls), representing 55.6 % of the entire Slovak population of first graders, participated in eight motor performance (MP) tests, the results of which were correlated with somatic parameters (body height, body weight, and body mass index (BMI)) and socioeconomic indicators (SEIs) within the children’s respective territorial regions. The largest correlations were observed between MP and unemployment rate (r = −0.802) and between MP and economically active population with primary education (r = −0.807). Other correlations between MP and SEIs were also found at the level of self-governing regions (r = 0.995) and districts (r = 0.551). SEIs and MP were strongly correlated, indicating that children who grow up in better socioeconomic environments display greater MP. Therefore, national and local governments should provide tangible and intangible resources to enable the proper development of children’s MP.

O presente estudo teve como objetivo comparar por grupo etário, sexo, nível competitivo, posição de jogo e anos de prática de futebol dos futebolistas moçambicanos em função das orientações cognitivas para o ego e tarefa. A amostra foi constituída por 443 praticantes de futebol pertencentes a 32 clubes, sendo 196 (44.2%) femininos e 247 (55.8%) masculinos, com idades compreendidas entre os 16 e os 37 anos. Para a realização do estudo foi aplicada a versão traduzida e validada para a língua portuguesa do Task and Ego Orientation in Sport Questionnaire – TEOSQ. Os resultados evidenciam que os futebolistas obtiveram valores altos quanto à orientação cognitiva para a tarefa (4.01 ± 1.07) e moderadamente baixos quanto à orientação para o ego (2.72 ± 1.17). Face aos resultados, conclui-se que o tipo da orientação cognitiva da prática desportiva é um factor importante que distingue os futebolistas moçambicanos. Há predominância de uma orientação cognitiva voltada para a tarefa nestes futebolistas, favorecendo a uma maior manifestação de atitudes desportivas indo de acordo com as evidências literárias em outros contextos de futebol.

There is a close link between moral education and sports activities. A well-organized sport can be an excellent means of transferring positive values to children and adolescents, which can influence motivation and group processes. This study aimed to analyse (a) the relationships between social, personal and individualistic values, motivational orientation and team cohesion amongst young soccer players and (b) compare differences in these variables between players competing in different age categories. Our participant sample comprised 401 male soccer players of Spanish teams (mean age = 14.64 years) competing in official competitive leagues, of five age categories, Under-10 years to Under-19. All participants responded to three instruments: the Values Scale for Positive Adolescent Development, the Perception of Success Questionnaire and the Group Environment Questionnaire. Correlation and regression, and analysis of differences between categories were performed. The results confirm that personal values are mainly related to task orientation, and individualistic values to ego orientation. The values of responsibility, integrity and honesty were the best predictors of task orientation, and social recognition and hedonism predict ego orientation. Honesty and responsibility were the main predictors of both task and social cohesion. Younger players showed a higher level of social values, task orientation and social cohesion, while older players show higher individualistic values and ego orientation. Implications for research or practice are discussed.
