Introduction. The dimensional accuracy of casts is essential in the quality of fixed prosthesis treatment, whereby the impression method is a very crucial factor affecting it. The aim of this in vitro study is to compare the dimensional accuracy of casts resulting from two types of silicone impression materials in different impression techniques and frequent times of cast preparation. Materials and Methods. A metal model was made from two prepared abutments, and 10 casts were prepared from each material technique (n = 40). The impressions were made by condensation and addition silicone (one-stage and two-stage impressions). The casts were made from same impressions 1 h, 24 h, and 14 days. The diameter, height, and the distance between two dies were recorded. Data were analyzed by repeated measure ANOVA (P value <0.05). Results. The dimensional accuracy of all four materials techniques of impression (diameter, height, and the distance between dies) was the same in different times of impression. Dimensional accuracy of the die diameter and distance between dies in one-stage (Speedex) condensation silicon and one-stage (Panasil) addition silicone did not differ significantly, and their one-stage method developed more accurate casts compared to the two-stage method of the same impression material. The height of the casts prepared from the one-stage method through Speedex and Panasil did not differ significantly from the two-stage method of the same impression material. Conclusion. One-stage condensation silicone and one-stage addition silicone material techniques offered the maximum dimensional accuracy in the obtained casts. The time of impression did not have any significant effect in the accuracy of any of the four impression material techniques.

Introduction: Dimensional stability of dies is very important in the success of fixed prosthodontics treatments. Impression methods and holding time are the most important factors affecting dimensional stability of the dies. Objectives: This study was performed to investigate the effects of three impression methods and four different dies holding times on the dimensional variations of dies. Material and methods: In this in vitro study, 144 gypsum samples were obtained from an in vitro model in the form of prepared pillars of a long bridge-one pyramid dies, with occlusal diameter of 9.43 mm and height of 12.84 mm, and the other with occlusal diameter of 12.84 mm and height of 12.80 mm. Two dies distance was 44.20 mm. Forty-eight samples were prepared by one-stage molding, 48 samples by two-stage impression with a spacer on the dies and toothless space, and 48 samples by the two-stage impression and with a spacer on the dies. Each of these three groups was divided into four 12-membered subgroups (1 h, 24 h, 48 h, and one week). Dimensional accuracy of the samples was evaluated by a digital caliper and micrometer. To analyze the data, two-way ANOVA test was used (p < 0.05). Results: The mean of diameter, the height of smaller die, and the distance between the two dies was 9.50 ± 0.01, 12.89 ± 0.02, and 44.26 ± 0.01 mm, respectively, in the one-stage impression; 9.46 ± 0.01, 12.87 ± 0.01, and 44.22 ± 0.01 mm, respectively, in the two-stage impression with spacer on the dies; and 9.46 ± 0.01, 12.87 ± 0.01, and 44.22 ± 0.01 mm, respectively, in the two-stage impression with spacer on the dies and toothless space. There was a significant difference between one-stage and two-stage impression methods (p < 0.05), but there was no significant difference between two two-stage impression methods (with different spacer types). Regarding different holding times, no significant difference between them was observed (p > 0.05). Conclusions: The two-stage impression can result in higher dimensional accuracy than the one-stage impression method. Also, when additional silicones are used, the impression can be postponed by one week without significant dimensional changes in the final cast.

A Promising Potential of Brown Algae Sargassum polycystum as Irreversible Hydrocolloid Impression Material

This study aimed to investigate the potential use of brown algae Sargassum polycystum as irreversible hydrocolloid (alginate) impression material. Potassium alginate extracted from Sargassum polycystum was prepared in three different compositions (14%, 15%, and 16%) and mixed with other standard components to form an alginate impression material. Prior to that, the purity of potassium alginate was quantified with Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis. As a control material, the alginate impression material from a commercially available product was used. All alginate impression materials were then applied to a die stone model. Dimensional accuracy was measured by calculating the mesiodistal width of incisors in the generated dental cast using a digital caliper 0.01 accuracy (five replications). In addition, to evaluate the dimensional stability, the impression results were poured at four different periods (immediately, 5 min, 10 min, and 15 min). An independent t-test was performed to compare the measurement results with p < 0.05 considered significant. Analytical results confirm that the impression material containing 15% potassium alginate gives the best dimensional accuracy similar to control (p > 0.05). Meanwhile, the optimal dimensional stability was produced in the impression material containing 16% potassium alginate. Our study suggested that brown algae Sargassum polycystum has a promising potential to be used as an alginate impression material in clinical application.
