<b>Radiographic images and relationship of the internal morphology and physiological potential of broccoli seeds

Abstract: Image analysis using X-rays is an efficient technique for assessing the seed quality of several species, presenting itself as a rapid response method that is simple to execute, reproducible and non-destructive. Thus, this research adjusted a methodology that aims to relate the internal morphology of broccoli seeds to their physiological potential through radiographic analysis of seeds and computerized images of seedlings. The broccoli cultivars used were Piracicaba Precoce and Ramoso Santana represented by ten… Show more

“…In the present research, although it was observed difference between the physical parameters comparing the seed lots, it did not reflect on the seed quality. In contrast, research with broccoli and leucaena seeds showed a close relationship between variables related to tissue integrity, as well as descriptors of shape and size, with physiological attributes (ABUD et al, 2018;.…”

“…High tissue density (as classified by the proportional area of seed occupied by the embryo and endosperm) was related to the germination performance of pepper seeds by Gagliardi and Marcos‐Filho () and Dell'Aquila (). Also, the relationship of relative density, extracted from radiograph image analysis with the length of broccoli seedlings was reported previously, referred to as gray density (Abud et al., ).…”

“…The automatization of the analysis of seed radiographies is important for the seed industry as a practical approach (Abud et al., ), as a high number of seed lots needs to be evaluated in a short period of time. Through computer‐aided analysis, variables such as relative density, integrated density, and seed filling, as well as shape descriptors, including area, perimeter, and circularity, can be easily generated by the ImageJ software.…”

“…The others variables describing whole seed and embryo size and shape also detected significant variations between These variables related to morphometric characters have a great importance for breeding programs and may correlate with physiological attributes. In studies with broccoli, Abud et al [4] observed that seeds area and circularity correlated significantly with seedlings length, indicating a possibility of using these variables to infer data on physiological quality.…”

“…Recent studies have demonstrated the efficiency of X-ray technique for application in various studies with seeds [4][5][6][7]. However, the radiographs analysis may be compromised when radiographic images are evaluated by human visual, since the process is slow and can generate interpretation errors [6].…”
