Essential oils from Hyptis marrubioides, Aloysia gratissima and Cordia verbenacea reduce the progress of Asian soybean rust

Abstract: ABSTRACT. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential of essential oils derived from Hyptis marrubioides, Aloysia gratissima and Cordia verbenacea for controlling Asian soybean rust. The inhibitory activities of the essential oils (applied in a concentration range of 0.05 -2%) on the germination of Phakopsora pachyrhizi urediniospores were investigated using in vitro assays. The curative and eradicating properties of the oils (applied in a concentration range of 0.05 -0.5%) were studied under greenhous… Show more

“…While Silva et al. (,b, ) observed that the preparations derived from these plant species were very effective against Asian soybean rust and in the treatment of soybean seeds infected by Colletotrichum truncatum , no information is available concerning the effects of these products on Oidium and on the induction of resistance to fungal infection.…”

“…The essential oils of these three species of plants have also been shown to be effective in the control of phytopathogens (Silva et al. ,b, ). In the present study, we have investigated the local and systemic effects of the essential oils and decoctions derived from these plant species on the control of O. eucalypti in a highly susceptible hybrid Eucalyptus urophylla × Eucalyptus camaldulensis (‘urocam’).…”

“…Besides agronomic practices, foliar application of some natural compounds such as Farnesyl-acetate [131], Acibenzolar-S-methyl [132], essential oils from H. marrubioides, A. gratissima, and C. verbenacea [133], coffee oil [134]; seed treatment with shale water [135]; root drenching with saccharin [136] were also reported to be effective in the suppression of SBR severity, but their actual efficacy for effective SBR control is still awaiting assessment under field conditions.…”

“…Despite the reports of their effectiveness against several diseases, mechanisms of the action of essential oils remain elusive. Although a direct effect in pathogen is well documented (Pereira et al, 2012;Nguefack et al, 2013;Silva et al, 2014Silva et al, , 2017Mourão et al, 2017), an indirect effect, by inducing plant defenses, cannot be ruled out. Therefore, this work aimed to assess the effect of B. maydis and E. turcicum as well as the essential oil of M. citrifolia in the activity of defense enzymes in corn plants.…”

“…Essential oils of cinnamon, citronella, lemongrass, clove, tea tree, thyme, neem and eucalyptus were promising for the control of coffee rust since they inhibited germination of urediniospores of Hemileia vastatrix; transmission electron microscopy analysis showed that urediniospores exposed to oils of clove, citronella and thyme promoted cellular disorganization and cytoplasmic vacuolization (Pereira et al, 2012). Total inhibition of urediniospore germination of Phakopsora pachyrhizi was also found after treatment with essential oils of Hyptis marrubioides, Aloysia gratissima and Cordia verbenacea and their curative application reduced area under the Asian rust curves by 33-41% (Silva et al, 2014). In maize, essential oil of Cymbopogon citratus reduced the progress of the Curvularia leaf spot when applied preventively and it was also showed to inhibit 100% of conidia germination, but not mycelial growth of Curvularia lunata (Mourão et al, 2017).…”
