The success of seedling production for ornamental or any other crops depends on several factors, including the use of highquality seeds and the choice of suitable substrates. The aim of this work was to evaluate the use of different organic residues as substrates and sowing depths on the emergence and initial development of pansy seedlings. Two lots of pansy seeds were used. Seed lot quality was evaluated for water content determination, 1000-seeds weight, germination, first count of germination, accelerated aging, seedling emergence in sand. Post emergence was evaluated by the emergence speed index, shoot length, shoot dry matter and number of leaves. The experiment was performed under completely randomized design, with four replicates. Data were submitted to analysis of variance through the F-test and the means, compared to each other by the Tukey test, at 5% probability. The most indicated sowing depths for the development of pansy seedlings were 1.5 and 2 cm while the substrate which presented the best results was the Beifort® S10.

Vegetative development and flowering of Encyclia hybrid based on fertilization and substrate

Due to the fact that the western region of Paraná is considered subtropical, with high temperatures in the summer, the hybrids of Encyclia are commercialized by the beauty of its flowers and durability. However, there are no studies involving potted plants, substrate types and fertilizers, as well as hybrids, for the genus Encyclia. Thus, the objective of this work was to evaluate the vegetative development and flowering of Encyclia based on fertilization and substrate. The experiment was conducted in a commercial orchard, from January to September/2017. The seedlings remained in a protected environment, with 50% shading. The experimental design was randomized blocks, in a 4 x 5 factorial scheme (substrates x fertilization intervals), with 4 replicates per treatment, and 4 pots per replicate. The lot chosen was sowed in vitro, with the hybrid Encyclia “Kropp” x E. atropurpurea. After five months of the last fertilization, the evaluations related to vegetative development and flowering were carried out. Substrates based on sphagnum presented better results in flowering. Organic fertilizations with Bokashi at 45 days after transplant (DAT) favor flowering and vegetative development of the Encyclia hybrid, which occurs in pots containing sphagnum-based substrates and with organic fertilizers above 60 DAT.

Os substratos são utilizados na maioria dos cultivos em plantas ornamentais. Entre suas características essenciais, destaca-se o valor do potencial hidrogeniônico (pH), que pode influenciar a disponibilidade de nutrientes às plantas, podendo favorecer sua absorção, dificultar e ainda causar fitotoxidez. Apesar da sua importância, as informações que auxiliem na sua manutenção para adequar às necessidades das plantas são escassas. Desse modo, o presente trabalho foi conduzido com o objetivo de avaliar a neutralização da acidez em substrato de casca de pinus com diferentes granulometrias. O experimento foi conduzido em casa de vegetação, em delineamento experimental de blocos ao acaso com 5 doses de calcário dolomítico (5, 10, 15, 20 e 25 g L-1), 5 granulometrias de casca de pinus (<4mm; 4-2mm; <2mm; 2-1mm; <1mm), 4 tempos de incubação (10, 20, 30 e 40 dias) e 4 repetições. Os valores de pH da solução do substrato foram determinados a cada 10 dias, utilizando o método de diluição do 1:5.Os valores de pH do substrato diferiram entre as diferentes granulometrias, doses de calcário e dias de incubação. As menores granulometrias, de <1mm e de 1-2mm apresentaram maiores valores de pH. O aumento das doses de calcário resultou em aumento do pH, enquanto o aumento do tempo de incubação, resultou em decréscimo do pH. Os substratos com diferentes granulometrias de casca de pinus devem receber quantidades de calcário distintas para adequar os valores de pH. Não se recomenda utilizar o substrato na primeira semana após a aplicação do calcário devido à instabilidade do pH, independente da granulometria.
