Objective: To determine whether there are differences in the intensity of chronic pain of elderly caregivers who are frail, pre-frail and non-frail. Methods: Quantitative, descriptive and cross-sectional study. The subjects were 187 elderly caregivers evaluated with a Multidimensional Pain Assessment Scale and the Fried Frailty Phenotype Assessment Components. Descriptive and comparative analyzes, Pearson's chi-square test and Kruskal-Wallis test were used. Results: 24.1% of the caregivers were frail, 55.1% pre-frail and 20.9% non-frail. The only socio-demographic variable that differed between the three groups was age (p=0.03). Mean pain intensity values were as follows: frail elderly (6.98), pre-frail (6.38) and non-frail (5.85). However, these differences were not significant (p=0.150). Conclusions:The present study did not find a significant difference in the intensity of chronic pain in elderly. Nevertheless, it is essential that health professionals and health care public policies give special attention to older caregivers. Keywords: Caregivers. Frail elderly. Chronic pain. Foram avaliados 187 idosos, utilizando-se a Escala Multidimensional de Avaliação da Dor e o fenótipo dos cinco componentes da fragilidade. Realizaram-se análises descritivas e comparativas, Teste de QuiQuadrado de Pearson e Teste de Kruskal-Wallis. Resultados: 24,1% dos cuidadores eram frágeis, 55,1%, pré-frágeis e 20,9%, não-frágeis. A única variável sociodemográfica diferente entre os três grupos foi a idade (p=0,03). A intensidade média da dor de idosos frágeis foi 6,98, de pré-frágeis, 6,38 e de não frágeis, 5,85. Porém, essas diferenças não foram significativas (p=0,150). Conclusões: Não foi possível verificar diferença significativa na intensidade da dor crônica de idosos cuidadores, no entanto, é primordial que haja uma maior atenção dos profissionais de saúde e políticas públicas de atenção à saúde voltadas ao idoso cuidador. BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Pain relief is a basic human right and an ethical issue involving all health professionals. This study aimed at describing what professionals of a multidisciplinary hospital team know about pain and analgesia. METHODS: This is a descriptive, cross-sectional study with quantitative approach, carried out at the Teaching Hospital of the Federal University of Sergipe. Sample was made up of 33 physicians, 26 nurses, 10 physiotherapists, 8 pharmacists and 5 psychologists. Data collection tool was a self-applied questionnaire encompassing knowledge about definitions and types of pain, evaluation and measurement, pharmacological and non-pharmacological management, and professional qualification in pain. Data were analyzed by simple descriptive statistics and are presented as tables. RESULTS: Participants of the study were predominantly females (72.0%), young adults (40.2%), with residence as maximum qualification (53.7%). Pain was considered discomfort/ unpleasant sensation (46.3%) and chronic pain was defined as a symptom 48.8%). Only one professional reported using multimodal treatment for pain relief. Most professionals stated having acquired knowledge about pain and analgesia after graduation (79.3%) and that they feel the need for specific qualification (70.7%). CONCLUSION: This study has provided a situational diagnosis of the knowledge of the multiprofessional team of the hospital, showing that there is inconsistency between participants' theoretical basis and their role in handling pain and humanizing assistance.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES:Aging adds to the prevalence of chronic diseases and functional impairment. Depressive symptoms and chronic low back pain affect an increasing number of elderly people and become important research topics. This study aimed to identify the relationship between chronic low back pain intensity, its generated disability, and the presence of depressive symptoms in independent elderly people for basic daily activities. METHODS:The study is descriptive, quantitative, and cross-sectional. A sample of independent elderly patients with chronic low back pain (n=46) enrolled in the Family Health Units of the city of São Carlos, SP, Brazil, was analyzed. For collection, we used the Characterization Sheet, Multidimensional Pain Rating Scale, Roland-Morris Disability Questionnaire, and the Geriatric Depression Scale. The data obtained were input in the Statistical Package for Social Sciences software (SPSS) for Windows to perform the descriptive and Spearman correlational analysis. The ethical precepts for research with humans of the National Health Council were respected. RESULTS: The most frequent pain intensity perceived by the elderly was intense (43.5%, n=20), preceded by moderate pain (41.3%, n=19). Most of the elderly describe low back pain as persistent, painful, and uncomfortable. The mean total depression score was 4.37 points (Md=4.00, SD=2.67, x min = 0.00, x max = 11.00).
