From high intellectual ability to genius: Profiles of perfectionism

Abstract: The aim of the study was to understand the components associated with the types of perfectionism described as adaptive/healthy, maladaptive/unhealthy or non-perfectionism, which could offer positive or negative aspects to improve excellence and well-being, exploring the number and content of the latent perfectionism structure as a multidimensional construct in a sample of High Intellectual Abilities (HIA) students.

“…Other studies ( i.e . Sironic and Reeve, 2015; as cited in[ 19 ]), however, proposed a six-class model after applying a latent class analysis of adolescents. Three of the six classes represented perfectionist subgroups (labeled adaptive perfectionist, externally motivated maladaptive perfectionist, and mixed maladaptive perfectionist), and three represented non-perfectionist subgroups labeled non-perfectionist A, non-perfectionist B, and order and organization non-perfectionist[ 19 ].…”

“…Therefore, while it can inhibit relevant skills such as problem solving or metacognitive regulation, it is also related to high intellectual ability with different potentialities leading to the achievement of excellence[ 25 ]. Thus, perfectionism in higher intellectual ability individuals is interpreted as a cognitive style linked to the idea of excellence and performance in academic and different settings, for instance well-being[ 19 ]. One worrying trend is that researchers are seeing perfectionism in younger adolescents and even children (Portešová and Urbánek, 2013; as cited in[ 1 ]).…”

“…As mention above, perfectionism is believed to be one of the non-cognitive factors that cause a lack of academic achievement (Fong & Yuen, 2014;Rimm, 2006). Perfectionism has long been regarded as a personality trait on characteristics of gifted learners (Fong & Yuen, 2014;Miller et al, 2012;Mofield & Peters, 2015;Sastre-Riba et al, 2019;Speirs Neumeister, 2004b;Speirs Neumeister & Finch, 2006;Stornelli et al, 2009;Wang et al, 2012). Approximately 75% to 87.5% of gifted students are perfectionists (Chan, 2010;Davis et al, 2014).…”
