A Systematic Review of Experimental Studies on STEM Education

This research systematically examines the experimental articles on STEM education (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education). In this direction, experimental articles with the Social Sciences Citation Index on the Web of Science were analyzed within the scope of research questions, taking into account the guidelines of PRISMA. The research was carried out using the systematic review method. In the first search made in this line, the results listed 17,482 studies. Then, this number was reduced to 34 by applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Finally, the studies were examined in detail, and 12 articles that were not suitable were excluded from the scope. Thus, this research was carried out on 22 articles. In line with research problems, articles were categorized by publication year, country, method, study group and number, data collection tools, data analysis methods, topics covered, and experimental methods. The research results infer that the number of articles increases every year, and Turkey and China are the pioneering countries in this sense. It is noteworthy that mixed methods and quasi-experimental methods are generally preferred in the literature. Contrary to the literature, another result obtained from the research is that teachers are preferred in variable numbers as the study group. Scales, tests, and interviews are the most frequently used measurement tools by researchers. Besides, t-tests and content analysis are used in data analysis. Additionally, various topics are covered in the articles. One of the results obtained from the research is that the effect of STEM education on various skills and achievements is examined more. In line with these results, some suggestions were made by discussing the studies in the literature.

Abstrak. Tujuan pengabdian ini adalah memberikan pelatihan tentang digitalisasi pembelajaran IPA berbasis STEM kepada MGMP guru IPA Kota Semarang, Indonesia. Pelatihan dilakukan melalui penyampaian materi-materi serta praktik dan implementasi nyata oleh para guru terkait digitalisasi pembelajaran IPA berbasis STEM. Metode yang digunakan dalam kegiatan pengabdian ini adalah pemaparan materi oleh pengabdi, diskusi berupa tanya jawab, pendampingan pelatihan, mendemonstrasikan dan praktik secara langsung digitalisasi pembelajaran IPA berbasis STEM. Hasil kegiatan pengabdian yaitu dapat meningkatkan pemahaman digitalisasi pembelajaran IPA berbasis STEM dan respons peserta terhadap pelatihan adalah positif. Rata-rata pretest pemahaman digitalisasi pembelajaran IPA berbasis STEM peserta sebelum adanya pelatihan adalah 61,04%, sedangkan setelah pelatihan meningkat menjadi 90,73%. Peserta memiliki respons positif terhadap aspek kelayakan materi maupun aspek penyajian pelatihan dengan skor rata-rata persentase sebesar 93,33%. Simpulan dari kegiatan ini adalah kegiatan telah berlangsung dengan baik dan meningkatkan pemahaman guru tentang digitalisasi pembelajaran IPA berbasis STEM. Abstract. The purpose of this community service is to provide training on the digitization of STEM-based science learning to science teachers group in Semarang, Indonesia. The training is carried out through the delivery of materials as well as real practice and implementation by teachers related to the digitization of STEM-based science learning. The method used in this community service is the presentation of material by the community service members, discussions in the form of questions and answers, training assistance, demonstrations and practice of digitizing STEM-based science learning. The results of this community service were able to increase understanding of the digitization of STEM-based science learning and the participant's response to the training was positive. The average pretest understanding of STEM-based science learning digitization of participants before the training was 61.04%, while after the training it increased to 90.73%. Participants had a positive response to the aspects of material feasibility and aspects of training presentation with an average percentage score of 93.33%. The conclusion of this study is the activity has been going well and has increased teachers' understanding of the digitalization of STEM-based science learning.

<i>Multicultural education is beginning to gain inroads into teaching practices, educational research, and teacher training programs. There is a growing list of resources to support educators in creating welcoming spaces in the classroom for marginalized students from underrepresented groups. Educational researchers and practitioners have provided frameworks for the proper integration of multicultural content and strategies into the teaching and learning process. However, a vital part of the learning process is assessment, which is majorly framed after the content of the dominant culture. Research has shown that intelligence and state-approved tests are characterized by content that is relatable to students from the dominant culture. Taylor and Nolen (2022) have combined years of experience in teaching and research to suggest ways of creating an inclusive and just assessment that showcases the diversity of the modern American classroom. This article is a review of their book, whose aim is to situate culturally and socially responsible assessment in educational theory, research, and practice.</i>
