Ten Years-Snapshot of the Occurrence of Emerging Contaminants in Drinking, Surface and Ground Waters and Wastewaters from São Paulo State, Brazil

Abstract: Emerging contaminants have been considered one of the main concerns for ensuring the quality of water around the world. This work presents the results of 10 years of analyses carried out in the state of São Paulo (Brazil) that has the high population density and intense agricultural and industrial activities. In this work 58 compounds (9 hormones, 14 pharmaceuticals and personal care products, 8 industrial compounds, 17 pesticides and 10 illicit drugs) were determined from 2006 to 2015 in 708 samples including… Show more

“…11 Residues of these estrogens are often found in aquatic matrices worldwide, such as surface water, groundwater and even potable water. 1,4,12,13 In Brazil, these compounds have already been found in concentrations above 1000 ng L −1 , 3,14,15 ranging from 0.09-11 130 ng L −1 in different aqueous matrices. 12 Despite the risk posed by these substances, there is still no legislation to limit their release into the environment.…”

“…In a survey on the occurrence of antibiotics in wastewater treatment plants, Wang et al [14] reported sulfamethoxazole (SMX), clarithromycin, amoxicillin, ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin, and norfloxacin (NOR) as the six antibiotics found in higher concentrations. In another study, performed by Montagner et al [15], 708 samples of drinking, surface, and ground water and wastewater from São Paulo State (Brazil) were analyzed, and the results showed that amoxicillin, trimethoprim, cephalexin, ciprofloxacin, SMX, NOR, and ampicillin were the drugs detected with higher frequency.…”
