Npk: Essentials for Sustainability

Abstract: Human population growth and development has been largely dependent on non-renewable natural resources, which cannot be indefinitely sustained. Beyond, coal and other abundant resources cannot continue to be used at current rates due to their impact on the environment and climate. It is thus important to replace as much as possible the fossil fuels and scarce minerals as sources of energy and industrial raw materials. Biomass plays a key role in this scenario, since its availability depends on abundant but ofte… Show more

“…In general, Brazilian soils are impoverished in nutrients necessary for the commercial production of plant foods. The country imports 75% of the fertilizer used to produce food (Galembeck et al, 2019). In the year 2019, the Brazilian fertilizer imports hit a record with the purchases totalizing 31 million tons, spending the US$ 9 billion, and the expectation is that these numbers will continue to increase (Vegro, 2018;BrasilAgro, 2020).…”

“…For agriculture crops, complete fertilizer such as NPK provides the three most important macronutrients for the growth and development of plants. 48 Thus, the prolonged delivery of this agricultural input is particularly of interest to avoid loss during fertilization.…”

“…Several factors have impacted coffee plantations, such as low prices in the world market, old plantations and lack of financing and investment to renew the culture. Climate change (increase in temperature), poor soil nutrition and disease have also negatively affected coffee production in Cuba [6,7]. Little access to international markets has forced Cuba to develop research aimed at replacing chemical inputs in crop nutrition [6].…”

“…Nutrition in field crop establishment and seedling production has limited crop expansion and productivity in Cuba. In coffee growing, obtaining quality seedlings is one of the main elements necessary to obtain good stability and productivity of the crop [6,7]. The production of coffee seedlings is performed in nurseries.…”
