Despite the obvious connection between conservative Christian leaders and Bolsonaro, from his electoral campaign to the formation of his administration, religious agency in Brazilian politics goes beyond a mere conservative register. This article seeks to trace various dimensions of the trajectory made by evangelicals in Brazilian politics as a tipping factor in the emergence of a new protagonism of religious actors in politics. It discusses how the emergence of evangelicals as public actors has included different ideological and practical expressions, as well as internal disputes and ventures some remarks on whither current trends point to as Bolsonaro's government makes room for the evangelical right but sparks reactions and rearticulations from various forms of evangelical progressives.

This article demonstrates that the authoritarian populist strategy is most appealing when leaders create a sense of crisis and present themselves as having the only solution. The article underlines three performative methods of how Jair Bolsonaro in Brazil offered simple answers for a crisis and portrayed other political actors as the responsible ones to be removed. Firstly, nativism presents a conservative view on how politics should be structured by perceiving all “non-natives” as threatening. Secondly, messianism, the fetishism of Bolsonaro as a “messiah” who leads the way in the battle between “good” and “evil,” serves to reinforce the support of the Evangelist base against “PT members.” Finally, conspiracism provides an easy way to eradicate ambiguities and helps to fuel an antagonism against the “enemy.”

Considerada a aparição acintosa de representantes evangélicos e católicos extremistas na disputa pela agenda pública nacional desde o início do novo século, o artigo reflete sobre os influxos da religiosidade cristã no Serviço Social brasileiro a despeito dos acúmulos moderno e marxista da renovação profissional, advindos do caldo cultural da intenção de ruptura. Em investigação histórico-crítica com delineamentos bibliográfico e documental, é problematizado que, apesar de todo o empenho para ultrapassagem do Serviço Social tradicional e a consagração da direção estratégica vigente, a religião permanece sendo um tema a ser encarado pela categoria de assistentes sociais dado ao novo lugar que assume nas relações entre a sociedade e o Estado. Posta a centralidade da formação profissional para o fomento do perfil de assistente social pretendido pelo projeto ético-político, conclui-se que são maciços os desafios nesta direção já que, sob o capitalismo contemporâneo, reatualiza-se o conservadorismo em bases ultraneoliberais e neofascistas que contam com o proselitismo do discurso religioso moralizador e bélico em ataques à educação, à ciência e à cultura.
