Studying thermal behavior is very important for monitoring the quality of polymers on an industrial scale. Commercial geomembranes are materials with low permeability that can be used for multiple purposes, such as geotechnical engineering in liners for potable water. They can also be used as liners for waste liquid, e.g., sewage sludge and soil coverings for landfills. In this paper, the mechanical and thermal behavior of four geomembranes with thicknesses around 2.1, 1.9, 1.7 and 0.8 mm, sold in Brazil by different companies, was evaluated. Thickness, density, tension, puncture and tear resistance and carbon black content were used to characterize the properties of these materials. Thermogravimetry, differential thermal analysis, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and dynamical mechanical analysis (DMA) were used to examine the evolution of these geomembranes thermal behavior. Moreover, activation energy of the thermal decomposition was estimated from non-isothermal kinetics. The results obtained by thermogravimetry showed that the geomembranes have a different thermal behavior from each other. Data obtained by DSC showed a widening of the melting peak after the second heating. Activation energy values obtained by the Flynn-Wall-Ozawa and Capela-Ribeiro isoconversional methods for each sample showed variations between them. Based on the DMA experiment, the store modulus (E 0), loss modulus (E 00) and tan d showed different behaviors for the 0.8-mm sample and no significant changes in the other samples. Concerning the mechanical properties, it can be observed that the density and black carbon data have compatible values between the samples.

An assessment tool for municipal construction waste management in Brazilian municipalities

Construction waste is generated during construction and remodelling undertakings. Construction waste management (CWM) is a challenge in developing countries such as Brazil. Thus, it is necessary to create tools by which CWM may be evaluated. This article presents the elaboration of a tool to assess CWM in Brazilian cities; moreover, this method facilitates such analyses in regions which lack substantial quantitative data. In doing so, the tool, known as the Assessment Index for Construction Waste Management (ICWM), combines quantitative and qualitative information and is composed of 49 indicators and 19 criteria divided into the following groups: operational; environmental; politico-economic, educational; and social. The analytic hierarchy process was used to assign the weights attributed to the groups and criteria to build the index. The indicators were measured according to a standardized rating scale proposed for each one. These elements were aggregated in a mathematical formula that enables the calculation of the ICWM. The aggregation method used was a weighted linear combination, and the index is rated on a 0 to 1 scale. The ICWM was tested in four municipalities. In all cases, the management was considered inefficient. The proposed tool proved to be effective in evaluating the CWM. In cities where the ICWM was tested, it was possible to identify the significant deficiencies of the CWM and recommend improvement actions to develop more efficient and sustainable management.

Inovações tecnológicas têm sido incorporadas ao setor da construção civil. A adoção do BIM, por exemplo, mostra-se como alternativa para otimização dos processos de projeto e execução de obras. Neste trabalho, investigou-se a contribuição do processo BIM para a redução da ocorrência de resíduos da construção civil em obras públicas. Para isso, adotou-se para estudo o projeto padrão em BIM do Centro de Referência para Assistência Social, com execução em Biguaçu/SC. Foram analisados critérios para minimização de resíduos da construção por meio de BIM: (1) detecção de conflitos, interferências e colisões, (2) sequência construtiva e planejamento da construção, (3) redução do retrabalho, (4) sincronização do projeto e do layout do canteiro, (5) detecção de erros e omissões e (6) previsão das quantidades de material. Os critérios foram analisados de forma qualitativa, com registros fotográficos e diário de obra, e de forma quantitativa, com medições da área de alvenaria de vedação in loco no modelo BIM. Os resultados mostram que é necessário melhorar a detecção de interferências, erros e omissões na fase de projeto, bem como o planejamento do canteiro e da execução. Foi elaborada uma proposta para aprimoramento dos processos da instituição pública para a minimização de resíduos utilizando BIM.
